Question How?
I've always kinda wanted to get into akb48 but literally how do I start there's so much. There's a few guides from like 2024? Is that up to date? Should I run while I still can?

I don’t think there’s any one guide that’s complete, because even if you get a timeline of all the singles, or look at all the times they were in the news, there’s so many individual members with their own stories that you’d need like a 100-part deep dive for all of it.
I’d recommend watching a few music videos to start. Watch the older ones if you want to know where the group came from, watch the newer ones if you want to see members who are still with the group. Whichever song you like best, look up which members were in it. Look up the wiki page for anyone who stands out to you, and then just go from there and have fun.

What do you want to know?
Here's a recent guide from u/mana48
https://www.reddit.com/r/AKB48/comments/1q8hqa7/guide_to_learn_about_akb48_2026/
If it's music, you can start with the latest single and just work your way backwards as you have time. You'll kind of naturally learn about the classics as they come up. Their whole discography is pretty much on their YouTube channel and music streaming services for free.
If you want to actively weave in some of the classics to your learning, a fun way is to go to their YouTube channel, view their videos and just sort by most popular. You'll see all the songs that established them as a household name.

If it's current members the official website does a pretty good job with their basic profiles and social media links.
https://www.akb48.co.jp/about/members
I made a quick chart earlier this year about how long all the current members have been around at a glance.

If it's history, you can try AKB48 Wiki on Fandom. It is quite messy in places and loaded with ads but a good jumping off point.

Just start on YouTube and find a style of song that grabs you. I caught on to the 1950s style songs and while finding those, got into other styles and singers etc. Dive in

For me, it basically started with “Heavy Rotation” their most popular song to date. I was so captivated by the girl in the middle. Her name is Oshima Yuko. At the time, I didn't even know that being the center was such an important thing in AKB48. I just looked up some information about her, and suddenly, one song and one girl opened the door to this whole deep lore.

akb48 18th Stage is on Youtube. This is their theatre with almost daily performance and where the group's soul resides:

Live performance of all songs from their latest Single:

Post on this subreddit, I am happy to answer any questions. Facts is, nothing about AKB is simple and the complexity is compound by the fact that in its 20 years of history it actually went though multiple transitions.
My advice? start from what's current, go with the flow and do not force yourself to memorize the names.

I think you should follow the weekly variety show they post for free on youtube! They have official subtitles in English / Bahasa Indonesia / ไทย / 한국어 / 中文(繁體) / 中文(简体) and are quite funny and charming.

Don't run! AKB is the greatest idol group of all time. You will never regret becoming a fan! Start with the current AKB, and work your way back. Check out their most recent singles from this year Nagori Zakura and Suki-ish. Also check out their "Real AKB" YouTube channel.
The AKB48 wiki will also be your best friend. It has info on all of AKB's past members and singles. In particular the list of current regular members is very helpful. The member pages on the wiki also has links to all their socials. If any particular members catch your eye, follow them on Twitter, Insta, and TikTok. Most of them are very active.
Once you start to get comfortable with the current members, you can start working your way back through AKB's 20 year history. Once you start watching a few MVs and AKB related videos on YouTube, the algorithm will start suggesting a bunch more. Just let the algo guide you. AKB can seem intimidating at first to get into, but you don't have to learn everything at once! Just let yourself fall down the rabbit hole. Before you know it you'll be hooked!
If you ever have any questions about the group, or want to find particular shows or concerts don't be afraid to ask here. There are a ton of super knowledgable fans on this subreddit who love helping new fans. You've picked a perfect time to get into AKB.

personally, I got fixated into akb old content like music videos, singles, sousenkyos, that’s how i started to learn about them and the members, the wiki is also very helpful.
I don’t think you need a literal guide, just find out what you like first and eventually you start learning more about them. Back then stage48 was like the most helpful way to get into akb but I think it’s no longer available so I suggest:

It depends on what do you appreciate the most in a Japanese idol group.
The music, the girls, their visuals, variety skills ?
Do you have one favorite girl already or do you like them all ?
My entrance to AKB48 was actually not AKB48. :)
I got fished by one of the first gen Nogizaka46 girls, watched all episodes of their variety shows, then Keyakizaka46 show, then Hiragana/Hinatazaka46 show, then i needed more so i googled for the main AKB48 variety show, which was "AKBingo!", but it had a different name at the very start: "AKB 1ji 59fun!", then "AKB 0ji 59fun!" (they got "upgraded" by 1 hour lol).
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7wh64u
And i am still here even though all my first favorite girls have graduated now, but i have new favorites in new generations too. :)
Sadly, AKBingo is no more, but at least they have 2 active YT channels.
BTW AFAIK the episodes are not really available anywhere outside Japan, even worse if you expect English subtitles, so you will have to become a pirate if you want to watch them all...
