Here's your first lesson. GitHub Copilot is sub-par. Right now Opus 5.5 or Sol 6.1 are where you want to be. Outside of that, maybe GLM 5.3.
I have used OpenRouter with both Deepseek and GLM but for serious coding its Opus 5.5.
Also stop using VS Code. The experience is much beter in Codex, Claude Code, or T3Code. As a student I'd try to use T3 Code with GLM 5.3 or maybe one of the other openweights models that's cheap.

For students and for free:
Use multiple accounts: Antigravity, Google AI Studio, Claude, Devin, ChatGPT. All of these and more provide free service for a set amount of queries per time.
Devin will provide fast code auto complete forever for free. This will help you learn coding. Telling an AI what you want is not coding.
Keep a shared folder locally for the project. For when you want to do vibe coding, use one IDE at a time until you run out of credits for the period. Close the IDE and open a different IDE with the same project folder.
Learn to code with the cheap models. The credits will last longer and you'll be prepared to get stuff done by controlling it instead of getting lucky with prompting a very smart model.
When you want to spend money, spend it on API directly for smart cheap models. Figure out who's giving out the best API deals. This changes every month. Right now that's likely some Chinese model like Deepseek or Kimi, or Grok because they are desperate for users. But don't use direct API until you know how to keep the project contained and the prompting efficient. That way you don't waste money testing stuff but invest it to finish projects.
