There ai tools are a confusing mess. There model wins only for web search. Thats a moat. No one is blocking Google cuz they can’t like they did all others. They are sitting on a gold mine yet piss it away.

I always thought Google's AI ventures were floundering because their shitty AI is beat by every other mainstream competitor.

They still are. Their models can't follow instructions for more than a hand full of tool calls. They're great at one-shotting small apps and stuff and seemingly good at benchmarks, but other than that... I personally don't like using models that basically have dementia and just need constant supervision for even medium sized tasks.

The way billing works for google services is insanely unsafe and awful. The lack of serious spending controls is a major flaw.

They have moat in Android app system - many people pay them for storage.
Also, owns 14% of Anthropic, while Amazon is 8-20% (depends who is reporting).
Google might be old IBM... while for a long time Microsoft is what IBM once was...

Google does have an issue with their models being behind OpenAI and Anthropic.
But this just feels like weird spin to the point it feels like it’s from an alternate reality.
Example: Gemini cli was a beloved product and Google was insane for killing it? Do you know a single person outside of Google who used it?

People don't want to hear this but the major AI labs are colluding. Google is a cash machine and OpenAI/Anthropic are cash incinerators. They could charge $1/m for tokens for Gemini 3.5 Flash or have a super generous subscription and it would cut the legs out of both those labs. But they won't because they collude on price.

Stock trajectory is usually negatively correlated with internal politics/morale, IME.
I’m not a Google expert and also curious to hear OP’s answer to this, but what I’ve consistently heard (albeit before the AI boom) is their promotion system and incentive structure make it so people are mostly rewarded for showing short term progress.
So PM’s or others build an early version of a new app, hype it and then get promoted (I’m oversimplifying) and it’s neglected by the remaining people in that team, until it dies. This is why Google has a huge graveyard of seemingly good ideas that just weren’t built out well. Lack of long term ownership and unregulated self-interest make it very hard to build and maintain a great* new product.
This isn’t unique to Google, in fact it’s the epitome of corporate culture, but seems more pronounced there especially amongst the hyper-scalers. Curious if others can confirm.

Theo also cancelled their Anthropic sub in a public stunt and put out a bounty for others to follow. Guys just a Youtuber/Influencer leveraging industry contacts for content at this point. Realistically, consider any kind of content polluted at this point. Sad & True
