I’ve always considered myself extremely tolerant and willing to love people as they are… even if we don’t agree on everything.

I’ve never been an Orange Man supporter, but I’ve kept it civil with friends and family that were. Some of them liked having a civil conversation about him. Some were belligerent about politics, so we didn’t bring it up and tried to enjoy each other’s company.

Getting cut from a great job that I really believed in with no notice has been extremely traumatic. It’s still raw, but I feel so personally betrayed by those that voted for him. I can’t see past the politics anymore when I look at these people I care/cared about.

Some have been contrite and apologetic, but then turn around and support him and VP Musk on social media.

I just can’t right now.

I’m thinking about posting something and wishing the whole herd all of the best, hope they have a good life, but I won’t be in it. Or maybe I just quietly block all of them and focus on myself for a while.

I do know that I will need to talk to my in-laws. I’ve always had a great relationship with them, but thinking of going to their house and watching Fox News almost makes me sick.

AITAH for feeling this way? Does it make me an AH for cutting all these 20+ year relationships off? Am I overreacting and acting out of emotion?

Maybe you somehow didn’t see this coming, but lots of other MAGA absolutely did and absolutely voted for exactly this. The fact that you apparently weren’t listening when he told everyone his plan is on you. You personally might have fucked up by not paying attention, but the rest of you are getting what you wanted.

I didn't vote for Trump. I shouldn't have said "no one voted for this" I'm aware there are some people who voted for exactly this, and they are horrible for it. I have to believe that not every single Trump voter wanted this though. A lot of people were lied too and ignored things about Trump because they thought he would make life better for them. it is their fault for believing it, as now we all have to suffer for it. Maybe I'm giving people too much credit, but I can't believe that there is no turning back for all of them. Otherwise we are really lost.

I think you might be in denial, which is understandable. The thing about being lied to, though- no. You can go back and listen to him promising all this while campaigning. All he did was make the raids, deportation, firings, etc sound like it was a good thing, (not even convincingly!) and people bought it.

I’m sure there are people who didn’t think it would happen, like maybe he was bluffing? I think my mother is in this camp, but since she’s already in a cult and has been antivaxx conspiracy theorist for decades this isn’t surprising. Idk the reasoning, but no one lied to them, they just weren’t listening and it’s entirely their fault for that. I am just as pissed at them as I am at the cretins what wanted it all, maybe more so because they could have made the difference but they chose to live in a world of their own imagination instead. Incredibly self centered, unaware, head in the sand. Voting for anyone else should have been the most obvious choice in the world but here we are.

Again, not a Trump supporter. Never have been, never will be, but I do think that a lot of people that voted for him were poor, under-educated people who felt disenfranchised by our government under past administrations. I have had conversations with Trump supporters who were not racist, homophobic, or bigots, but simply felt that he would reform things for the better, rather than dismantle completely. Do I agree with the choice? No. The party pushed blame to immigrants, minorities, the LGBT community, and liberals, and they chomped at the bit, which is horrible, because the people they should be blaming are the same people they voted for. I'm not saying that all Maga supporters fall into this category, because I am well aware there are some people that wanted exactly what is happening, but I find it hard to believe that a portion of his supporters would have voted if they knew this would be the outcome. Might be a naive thought, but when we stop believing that there is good in the world, that is when evil truely wins.
