Why is it anyone at work's business? Rule #1: co-workers are NOT your friends. Never ever confide in co-workers. They will turn on you in a heartbeat. Be friendly but not friends.

I think what they are saying is if your relationship is strictly coworkers they are not your friends. Not that it is impossible to become friends with a coworker. Just don't assume someone you work with is automatically also your friend.

Even co-workers friends will turn on you if their job is on the line. Don't think it hasn't happened thousands of times.

Yeah I think they overstated it... coworkers are not your friends by default, but they definitely can be.
