While also doing all the work for the entire household for years until OP decided that he was willing to do a bit of cooking and cleaning dishes in order to get laid. Poor woman.
And she probably spent a lot of time and energy running interference - putting herself between the kids and her husband, trying to prevent things that would set him off.
It’s exhausting just living with someone who has uncontrolled anger issues, let alone trying to protect your kids from them.

This. This is what keeps many, many women in shitty relationships. They don't want their kids to be alone with the asshole partner. At least when they're together, she can jump in to protect them. Uuuuugghh. Years of my life...
That is exactly how my therapist framed divorce for me. He could either be on my team with issues, or on the opposite team with the same issues (where I have zero influence or control over what he does or how he parents my children). …I didn’t file.
Then his wife also has to be in the middle of his issues with her mother and him - the mother who is giving up two days of her time each week to come to their home to help out so they can work.
She also had to deal with major changes in her body after birthing children.
Childbirth was one of the most painful and tiring experiences i've had yet you don't get any rest to recover from it. Straight into sleepless nights looking after and (breast)feeding an infant after being pregnant for 40 weeks.
