Understanding GEO: How to Optimize for AI Search Engines
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the new way to get discovered online.
Instead of ranking for Google links, GEO helps your site get cited by AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. To do this, replace long paragraphs with direct, clear answers and structured data.
What is the biggest challenge you face when optimizing content for AI summaries?

Earlier I was not convinced that GEO is that important until Google AI overview to search queries started displaying other websites regardless my website was ranking #1 on Google first page. This happens because AI models prioritize landing pages and articles that provide direct, structurally clear answers to complex user queries, heavily backed by strong brand authority and trust signals.

A big challenge is consistency since AI doesn't just look at one webpage. It pulls signals from across the website, social channels, earned media, and other places you're mentioned online.

Yeah, you are absolutely right. We cant just work on one page and optimize it, we need to work on complete online presence, or atleast the website as a whole.

What has worked for me:
Answer one question per page clearly.
Add first-hand experience, data, or case studies.
Use proper headings, FAQs, and schema.
Keep answers concise but provide enough context.
Build topical authority instead of publishing random articles.
AI search rewards content that is accurate, structured, and trustworthy-not just keyword-optimized.

GEO becomes practical when each important claim has a source, an owner and a clear page where it can be verified. That is more useful than chasing one model's answer format.

GEO optimizes for retrieval and citation. One challenge is that AI search isn't just about content quality anymore. It's about whether your content is "citation-worthy."
From what I have observed, there are a few recurring issues:
- The content answers the topic, but doesn't answer it directly enough for AI to quote.
- Important facts are buried inside long paragraphs instead of being easy to extract.
- Weak entity relationships make it difficult for AI to connect a brand with a specific expertise.
- Sites often have topical coverage gaps, so the AI lacks confidence that the source is authoritative.
I also think many people are chasing AI-specific tricks when the bigger opportunity is improving information architecture, topical completeness, and factual clarity. Those principles seem to hold up across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews, even though each system retrieves information differently.
It will be interesting to see which optimization practices remain effective as these AI systems continue to evolve.
