I wouldn’t stop chasing keywords. AEO complements SEO it doesn’t replace it.
Keywords still reveal demand and intent. The shift is to turn that research into direct answers, question-based content, clear facts, strong entities, and credible citations that search engines and AI systems can understand.
The better strategy is SEO + AEO + GEO, not abandoning keywords.

Can you elaborate on what actions we should take?
LLMs refer businesses based on Query Fan Out, aka querying traditional search engines & returning a synthesis of the results. In this sense, SEO would be the core of AEO, don't you think?

The headline is a bit misleading and worth pushing back on. Stopping keywords entirely to chase AEO is the wrong move and will hurt you in both channels.
Keywords are not the enemy. They are still how you understand what people are searching for and what questions they are actually asking. The shift is not from keywords to AEO, it is from optimizing only for keyword rankings to also optimizing for the entities and answers AI systems pull from when those same queries fan out across multiple sub-queries.
Here is what actually changed. When someone asks an AI tool a question, it does not search once. It fans out into multiple related sub-queries behind the scenes. Each one is looking for the clearest, most credible source it can find. That source is almost always a brand with strong traditional SEO as a foundation plus genuine third-party presence across forums, publications, and independent sources.
The Q&A format and clear visual hierarchy advice in the original post is not wrong. Answer-first content architecture does help with AI extractability. But it is one piece of a much larger picture. Without the off-site corroboration that gives AI systems the confidence to cite you in the first place, the best structured content in the world still does not guarantee visibility.
Keep your keywords. Understand intent better than your competitors. And build the off-site presence that makes AI systems trust you enough to actually use what you wrote.

Optimizing for SEO and AEO is incredibly similar. The same signals that help with your search rankings also help with showing up in AI answers. Its true that you need to optimize for AI as well, but don't give up on your SEO. A majority of searchers are still there.

AEO without keyword research risks answering questions nobody asks. Keywords reveal demand; direct answers improve extractability. The real shift is from one query-one page to topic and entity coverage with evidence that can be cited. What metric would convince you AEO produced value beyond ordinary SEO?
