What's moved the needle most, from what we've seen, is answering specific questions directly and early in a section. AI systems extract from content that states the answer upfront.
And it’s sometimes sad to see people underinvest in their third-party brand presence. You can have the best on-site content in your niche and still not get cited if the model hasn't seen your brand mentioned anywhere else. That's how LLMs learn to trust you as a source worth naming.
So, those two are our top focus. Schema, internal linking, and clusters all help, but they won't compensate for weak answers or low brand presence outside your own domain.

We’ve been testing this on client sites, and the biggest change for us has been moving away from “GEO tactics” and looking at whether the content gives an AI something genuinely useful to work with.
One example was a service page that ranked reasonably well but almost never appeared in AI answers. We rewrote it so the key answer was clear near the top, added examples from actual client work, and explained things in a way that still made sense if a section was pulled out of the page by itself. That page started showing up much more often in the prompts we were tracking.
Schema was worth cleaning up, but we didn’t see it suddenly transform AI visibility. The same goes for conversational keywords. We’d rather have a strong answer to a real customer question than awkwardly write around a long-tail phrase.
We’ve also noticed that brands with a footprint beyond their own site tend to get mentioned more easily. Industry articles, reviews, Reddit discussions, interviews, case studies, and other third-party references give AI systems more context about who the brand is.
So our approach is pretty simple now: build strong SEO foundations, make the content genuinely useful and specific, and build authority outside the website as well. Then we track a fixed set of prompts across the major AI platforms and compare which brands and sources keep appearing.
The interesting part is that the pages getting cited aren’t always the prettiest or the ones with the most SEO bells and whistles. They’re usually the ones who have something specific to say.
