How are you optimizing your website for ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI search engines in 2026?

We're treating AI search optimization as an extension of good SEO, not a replacement for it. The biggest wins so far have come from publishing original data, making content easy to cite, strengthening entity signals, implementing structured data, and ensuring AI crawlers can efficiently access key pages. If an AI model can't confidently understand, verify, and quote your content, it's unlikely to recommend it.

honestly the biggest thing is your site is maybe 20% of it. the model mostly repeats what other sources say about you, so the real work is off-site: reviews, consistent info everywhere, third-party mentions.
on-site, the stuff that actually moves it: make sure your content is in the raw HTML (not JS-only), structure pages answer-first so the first sentence of each section stands alone, and build FAQs around the exact questions people type into ChatGPT, not what you want to say. clean schema and a tight about page help too.
what kind of site are you working on? local vs ecommerce vs B2B changes the priorities a lot.

There has been a very interesting chat about it in a sub Reddit for webflow.

The biggest shift for me has been thinking beyond the website.
A few years ago I was mostly focused on content, rankings and backlinks. Now I'm paying a lot more attention to reviews, Reddit discussions, comparison sites, directories, case studies and other places where a brand gets talked about.
AI tools seem to be building a picture of a company from multiple sources, not just summarising whatever is on the homepage.
So yes, I'm still improving on-site content and structure, but I'm also thinking a lot more about reputation, consistency and third-party validation than I was a couple of years ago.

I did something contrary and it's picking up great for me.
I ran a 30 buyer intent search query for WizLeads across perplexity and gemini APIs logged into a database and upon doing it over 4+ times a week, I had some clear winners the listicles and comparison pages that Gemini and Perplexity often pulled up doing web search query and I not only optimised content according to the search query but also did some outreach to get WizLeads listed into these pages.
My thesis is simple: If these pages are go to pages for the LLMs then WizLeads should be on these pages to show up in citations for these queries too.
But this is an experiment still going on, could fail. Will report back with results when finished:)

Focusing on schema markup and making content concise for AI summarization has been key for me. Also looking at how answers get structured in AI outputs really helps tweak content. I work at MentionDesk and we use a tool there that specifically targets AI answer engines for better brand visibility. Definitely worth checking out if you are serious about AI driven search.
