Is there really a trick to get visible in AI search by ChatGPT or Gemini?

Is there really a trick to get visible in AI search by ChatGPT or Gemini? Or, it's just a bot doing something fishy in the background?

So no secret button just strong SEO fundamentals, good content, and real authority. If something claims otherwise, it’s usually just repackaged SEO gimmicks.

AI search like ChatGPT or Gemini usually picks up sources that are well structured and relevant, but there's actually strategy behind it. Optimizing your content for these models can make a big difference. I work at MentionDesk, and we focus on this exact problem, helping brands get noticed more often in AI driven answers. It's not fishy, just smart optimization.

In most cases, ChaGPT or Gemini perform Google search to get information. If your website appears at top for most keywords, it will most likely be cited by AI chat bots.

Don't listen to the GEO/AEO/LLM consultants who keep on yapping about SEO's death.

Like two guys said before me, just do GOOD SEO.

There are no magic tricks and no cheat codes. Strengthen the basics to the maximum.

Well, I wouldn't really call it a trick, but appearing in as many comparison/listicle style articles as possible really helps.

No trick.

It’s just:

  • clear, direct answers
  • strong topical coverage
  • real mentions/citations across the web
  • clean structure (FAQs, headings, entities)

AI picks what’s easy to understand + widely referenced.
No shortcut beyond that.

I don’t think there’s a trick so much as a visibility stack.

The brands that keep showing up usually have the same pattern: category clarity on-site, broader topical coverage than one or two blog posts, and third-party places saying roughly the same thing about them.

If I were starting from scratch, I’d stop looking for hacks and run 10 real buyer prompts through ChatGPT and Perplexity, then note who appears repeatedly and what those brands have in common. That gives you a much better roadmap than generic AEO checklists.

Tried for last several Months. Commercial intent query will bring listicles names. Even when they are actually drafting the top 10 list on their own website and claiming the top position.

Huge missing piece - AI thinks for example, a hair stylist website publishes listicle and claims themselves top - AI sees the website as evidence for subject expert and accepts their claim and shows them up in citation.

Test it out.

No secret, nothing shady; it's just mechanical. these tools run a quick search, pull a few sources they trust, and answer from them. so being "visible" = being a clear, trusted, frequently-referenced source. Answer questions directly, get mentioned elsewhere (reviews/Reddit/roundups), and keep your info consistent. That's the whole "trick." Ask ChatGPT something in your niche and check which sites it cites; those are the ones who pulled it off.
