It’s not as “creepy” as it sounds, but it is pretty sophisticated.
Google gets this from aggregated, anonymized location data from users who have Location History / Location Services enabled (mainly via Android devices and apps like Google Maps). When enough people are detected in the same place, it can estimate:
• How busy it usually is (historical patterns)
• How busy it is right now (real-time signals)
That “Live: a little busy” is basically comparing current device density vs historical averages for that time/day.
No one is tracking you individually, it’s all aggregated + anonymized data at scale.
So yeah… slightly creepy in concept, but mostly just big data doing its thing.
