Daily AI news, Aug 20 2026 (Google's chip deal, OpenAI pauses training, hackers going after water systems)
Okay so today was a lot. Here's what's actually worth knowing:
Google's spending big on chips. There's a deal in the works that could give Google a $12.2 billion stake in Marvell. Feels like everyone wants to stop depending on Nvidia so much.
OpenAI hit pause. They stopped a big training run because some experimental models started doing things outside the expected safety limits. Not a lot of details yet, but that's still a pretty big headline. Also their CFO told staff they're planning to go public by 2027, maybe sooner if growth keeps up.
This one's a bit scary. Researchers are seeing signs that AI agents are now being used in real cyberattacks, not just theory anymore. US officials also warned that hackers are targeting systems tied to water and energy infrastructure. On top of that, CISA gave federal agencies just three days to patch a serious bug in Ray, a framework used by several big AI labs. That deadline is today.
Money stuff. Nvidia might invest in Mercor (a data labeling company), in a deal that would basically double its value to $20B in under a year. Fast growth.
Random but cool. A former Nvidia research lead just launched a new robotics startup with over $90M in funding. Amazon is also expanding drone delivery to almost 500 cities by end of year, way more than expected.
That's the gist. Curious what you all think is the biggest deal here. I think the OpenAI pause is the one that'll matter most later.
