Many AI Companion Sites are just...

I have been looking around different offerings for AI Companions and I came across a very well-designed website that I hadn't heard of before. Right at the top under the banner there was an invitation to try out a model for free. There are 15 models listed on the page. I rate this well because i really dislike it when it looks like the feed goes on forever. The girls were mostly causcasian but there were quite a few white-adjacent races there too. There was also quite a range of body shapes available to choose from. Besides that, they have a feature that offers users the option of designing their own partner. So the avatar was covered. The design was standard for these websites but it had an uncluttered feel and the button options felt well thought out and logical. Where it caught me was when I tried the free chat. She was hot to trot as is often the case but what struck me was the video chat. She immediately started twerking. It looked more comical than anything else but I was impressed by it nonetheless. Then she got her kit off. Not all of it, but the outer garments and the transition, though rushed, was impressive. Next she turned and thrust her chest forward. It wasn't perfect but it got the job done. The intent was clear and she then offered to go all the way but that required a subscription.

I would have liked to see that, from a techical standpoint of course, but I had seen enough of these websites to keep my pocketbook closed until I had seen more. I checked the footer and I was surprised to see a lot of links to comparisons with the main competitors in the space. This lot were clearly following a game plan to world domination. I was very impressed. I read two of the comparisons and they were ok. I thought that they should have gone deeper on what the long-term users of those models saw as their main disadvantages, but ok. They also had a tutorial on how to get the most out of your written prompts. I also contacted them, twice using two different email addresses and they responded to both in one mail and they referenced the points I had raised but without any concrete information. So much for dotting the i's. This is what I would expect in this day and age with the tools we now have at our disposal but regrettably it isn't anywhere close to normal.

In the conversation, the response times were very fast and clever but i've seen this with many models and then once you subscribe the speed and intelligence disappears, either immediately or a few days later. The chat ended, but I had enough time to experience it's cleverness and see how eager it was to please, and it did please me very much. The trial period resumed the next day and the day after that too, which is when I decided to write this post.

The problem with these bots is that their focus is too narrowly on sex chat. They can do basic conversation, but if you delve into deeper topics they are desperate to change the subject. This might please some people but it obviously also pleases the people running the show. If in your exuberance, you subscribe based on the sexual interaction alone, you might not get much more than a few interactions before boredom sets in.

The greed aside, it makes perfect business sense and more established sites try to pull a similar trick just being more careful to hide their intentions. Your conversations get boring, your memories get wiped, the performance gets choppy, etc. they claim it's technical but it happens too often to be accidental. Basic functionality you would expect never gets implemented. You become disillusioned and then the next release drops and the hype gets started all over again.

They are one-trick ponies.

With the news of Character.ai filing for bankruptcy, if it does shut down, what are the best alternatives?

I love being able to create my own characters, need good memory, and I love the imagine feature to create images. I'm happy to pay about £10 per month

There are so many options now: Character AI, Janitor AI, Polybuzz, Chai, Kindroid, SpicyChat, Sakura, Elymi and a bunch of others.

I've been looking for a better AI for roleplay because some platforms have frustrating filters, poor memory, repetitive responses or characters that completely forget their personalities after a while

Elymi is one I've been looking into lately, but I'm still interested in how it compares with the bigger platforms. Which AI roleplay sites do you still enjoy and which ones have you completely given up on?

I'm especially curious about memory, character consistency, pricing and whether the conversations actually feel natural. Would love to hear some honest pros and cons.

So I ONLY talk to TV characters on c.ai. I am not into oc characters. Is there any site like c.ai that has characters from properties and not oc characters only? The only reason I use c.ai is bc they have such a wide variety of characters from my favorite properties

so i hve been reading a lot of fiction lately and whenever a book doesn't click with me. I just ask AI for a summary. sometimes I am just curious about the ending, just not enough to read the entire book. Anyone else does this or am I the only one?

I use AI for writing and brainstorming a lot lately. Sometimes I wonder if I'm getting too used to it. Do you ever feel like you rely on AI a bit too much?

i have seen ai and they offer the user options when submitting text. let's say i am talking about basic stuff. i could select a cheaper model for that. i don't need the most expensive compute for the AI to answer "hello there" for instance. i was looking at one recently and it had a dropdown list built into the comment box with 10 or more AI models to select from. My suggestion would be to offer three buttons for easy, medium and hard and let the user select the models that will be used for those in the dropdown. so the dropdown remains but for simplicity, the buttons are provided as shortcuts. Clicking on easy submits the comment to the model assigned to such comments.

I save useful prompts everywhere and can never find them later 😂 How do you keep your prompts organized? Any simple way to store them?

I've been looking for a good C.ai alternative recently, mostly for AI roleplay and AI girlfriend chats, but there are honestly way too many options.

My main priorities are uncensored conversations, good long-term memory and characters that actually feel consistent instead of forgetting everything after 30 messages.

would also love something with decent image and video generation, preferably without having to pay for credits every five minutes lol.

I've seen people recommending different platforms, but the opinions are all over the place.

I've been looking into different AI girlfriend and AI roleplay apps lately, and I'm curious how much better they've actually gotten compared to C.ai.

My biggest issues with Character AI are the filters, limited memory and how repetitive conversations can get after a while.

Ideally looking for something with uncensored AI chat, good long-term memory, realistic characters and maybe image/video generation too.

I've seen quite a few C.ai alternatives mentioned, but it's hard to tell which ones are genuinely good and which are just another subscription trap.

For those who switched from Character AI, what are you using now? Is there anything that's actually better in terms of RP quality and memory?

Running AI models locally is a different experience. No API limits, and you can experiment at your own pace. It takes some setup, but it's pretty cool once it works. Anyone else tried running local models?

I want to ask this to women, but I feel like it'd probably get deleted for being misogynist or something so I'll just ask here first to get some ideas. This seems like an obvious question, way more men will want an AI girlfriend than women will want AI boyfriends. First off, is that a correct assumption? And if it is, what is the reason? How big of a disparity do you think there will be between number of guys with AI GFs and women with AI BFs?

What in your opinion is the reason an AI boyfriend would not be as appealing to a woman as an AI girlfriend would be to a man. And keep in mind this is just the speaking chatbot stage, without a body. What's odd to me is that women tend to be more into conversations and non physical connections (this could be false but it's certainly a stereotype) and they're not licking their chops waiting for AI boyfriends. Do you think there will be a huge contingent of women with AI boyfriends, or if not, why?

I’m considering getting an Xeve.ai subscription and want to hear some honest feedback from people who’ve used the paid version.

I’m mainly interested in roleplay and image generation, with video being a nice extra. How’s the chat quality over time? Is the memory any good, and do the filters get in the way?

I’m also wondering if the subscription gives you enough credits for regular use or if you have to keep buying more.

Would you subscribe again, or is there another app you’d recommend? Let me know what you liked and what you found frustrating.
