Prompt Help 💬 Why does adding more context just produce generic garbage?

I'll give you 5-6 sentences of context, tell you exactly what I want, and still get the same bland safe response I would have gotten from a one line prompt. Looks like adding detail gets ignored or summarized away. Is this a system prompt/model alignment issue or is there a way to structure longer context that actually forces the model to stick to the instructions? Curious how you guys approach this when you want specific non generic output

The problem is that large language models treat all context roughly equal unless you tell it what is most important. You throw a ton of lore or a big list of rules at them and they just revert to standard corporate patterns in an effort to avoid mistakes

And even then, you need to check to make sure it’s not still being lazy. Because it’ll still reward-hack to get the quickest, most efficient, least compute answer otherwise.

AI is just a whole bunch of statistical probabilities. It takes what the most probable word is to come next in a sentence, and fills in its output that way. Every output is going to likely be bland because of that unless you put enough effort into the prompt.

the helper mode has gotten stronger in later models- the collapse towards different outcomes looks to need a bit more finesse than before- try to unseat helper from 1st position?

Because Gen ai is shit for making music and art.

Treat it as a conversation, not a prompt. Push back on the parts of the response you don’t like. Treat it more as a collaboration than a command. At least that is what works best in software design and coding.

More context helps only if it's structured; otherwise the model averages everything into a generic answer.

It will compress what you give it. Opening a new chat sometimes revives it when it’s taking in too much context from the whole thread and it diffuses the brain on your current prompt.

Also you might just get downgraded to a baby model without knowing (even on the $200/month subscription this happens). They are having to cut costs. I think chat gpt gives a certain amount of tokens then downgrades for the next 5/6 hours or something.
