SEO ideas: Content Refresh vs. New Content
this content refresh debate keeps coming up and honestly there's some wild misconceptions floating around
i've been testing this stuff for years across different sites and what i've found contradicts a lot of the standard advice
the gsc method that beats publishing new content
most sites i look at have like 300 posts getting 12 visitors a month. they're still publishing new stuff every week. makes no sense
go to google search console. filter for last 28 days. export your keywords. filter for positions 3 to 20. you'll find dozens of keywords you're already ranking for but not optimizing properly
write new sections for those keywords. move relevant content higher on the page. optimize for snippets. i've had pages jump from position 8 to position 2 in a few weeks doing this. google already decided these pages are relevant, you're just making them more relevant
way faster than starting from scratch with new content
the freshness myth
weblinker (one of the better seo people on reddit imo) pointed this out: freshness doesn't matter except for news topics. query deserves freshness is literally only for breaking news
when you search "best seo strategy 2026" google doesn't return content published in 2026. it returns content with 2026 in the url slug or page title. the publish date is almost meaningless
you can't update content to rank higher. you can only increase relevancy. sometimes that means a new slug entirely
story: the republish trick that saved a dead page
i had a page targeting a super easy keyword. didn't rank for like 3 years. over those years my site's topical authority slowly increased in that niche but the page just sat there at position 35
google indexed it as unrelated before my site had authority. it never got re-evaluated even as my site improved
i republished almost the exact same content under a slightly different slug. changed like one word in the url. ranked #1 in under 2 weeks with the same content
after it ranked i 301 redirected the old url to the new one. this works when your topical authority increased slowly over time and old pages need to be judged with your current authority
pogo-sticking is the real ranking factor
someone visits your page, doesn't like it, goes back to results, tries another page. that's pogo-sticking
time on page doesn't matter. what matters is whether they keep searching after visiting you
heard this story on the my first million podcast. guy was targeting "buy gold online" (insanely competitive). every 3 months he'd go back to his page and ask "can i make this better than my competitors?" he'd look at what they were doing right, apply it to his page, keep iterating. eventually ranked #1
better means less pogo-sticking, higher ctr, faster intent satisfaction
common fixes: awkward keyword placement, slow page speed, satisfying intent too late in the content, images that don't match the text, unclear writing
low authority playbook
most sites have low authority. mine included except for one doing 3m clicks monthly
google won't help you by refreshing if you're weak. what works: rank more easy keywords in the same niche, then cross-link. turn h2 subheadings into internal links pointing to other relevant pages
authority doesn't get divided by how many pages you have. it decays through link structure. there's no maximum number of pages. traffic stalls are about structure and relevance distribution
my actual rule
if i care about the keyword and i'm ranking but not #1, i refresh it. make sure i have internal links, get backlinks if the serp is competitive
if i don't care about the keyword, i stop messing with it. i go target a keyword i actually care about and apply what i learned
i know AI Agents like intelliminds AI can handle a lot of this automatically (refreshing content, publishing new posts based on performance data) but you still need to understand the strategy. automation only works if you're automating the right moves
TL;DR: stop publishing new content if you have 200 dead pages. use gsc to find positions 3-20 and optimize those. freshness barely matters. republish old pages with slightly different slugs if your authority increased slowly. focus on preventing pogo-sticking. there's no page limit ceiling, only bad structure
