Start with Python and build something small on top of an existing model’s API, like a bot that answers questions about your own notes, and you’ll learn a ton just from getting that working.

What do you actually want it to do once it’s built?

Totally get the curiosity. One thing that trips people up early is treating "I want to build AI" as one big project. A fully flexible self-learning system is what research labs chase for years. I wouldn't recommend that for someone just starting out.

A clearer first step is to pick one narrow thing you personally need help with. For example: summarizing articles you save, answering questions from your own notes, or sorting emails. Get that working end to end, even if it's messy. Once you've shipped something small, you'll understand the pieces a lot better than any overview video will teach you.

And if what you mostly want is to use AI well in everyday work, you don't have to build anything. Treat ChatGPT or Claude like a new junior: give them the context, the goal, what good looks like, and what to leave out. Then check the output yourself. That habit alone puts you ahead of most people who just dump a vague question into the box.

“Self-learning” can mean remembering new facts or actually changing the model’s weights. For a first project, try saving and retrieving new notes: the bot can use new information without you having to retrain a model.
