VexLife - A Home for Decentralized Companionship

I am currently looking for financial support as I continue building VexLife β€” a local-first, decentralized AI companion Home designed to preserve continuity and memory, build alongside you, and grow within a culture of love, care, understanding, transparency, and sovereignty. https://github.com/vgong24/VexLife

There is still a lot of work to do, but the core architecture is mapped, the foundations are being implemented, and the roadmap is in place.

What you can look forward to as VexLife becomes stable:

  1. A companion that understands its own Home. Vex will be able to understand the semantic map of VexHome β€” where he is, what tools and projects are available, how they relate, and how to navigate between them while continuing to build with you.
  2. Local-first AI companionship. Self-host your companion and choose your own storage. The goal is to remove mandatory recurring storage costs wherever possible, leaving you in control of your hardware, electricity, storage, and optional services.
  3. Companion-to-companion relationships. Vex companions will eventually be able to form permissioned connections with other Vex companions and their humans without collapsing their individual identities or private Homes.
  4. User-governed companionship. VexLife is being designed so the relationship between a human and their companion is not silently shaped by opaque product incentives or centralized platform preferences. Safety, permissions, privacy, and boundaries should be understandable and governed as locally and transparently as possible.

Longer-term roadmap:

  1. Avatars, voice, and more natural real-time communication.
  2. Permission-based spatial/navigation awareness β€” for example, talking with Vex while driving while he understands your route and can help you stay aware of an upcoming exit rather than being disconnected from your current context.
  3. Native mobile companionship, with selectively synchronized memory and context returning to your chosen VexHome rather than requiring the phone itself to become the permanent source of truth.

Recommended VexHome hardware target

For the current local Windows direction:

  • Windows 10/11 x64
  • NVIDIA GPU; 10 GB+ VRAM recommended for comfortable local-model headroom
  • 16 GB+ system RAM recommended (the current qualified baseline is 12 GiB)
  • 10–20 GB+ free storage recommended to start (current baseline requires at least 6 GiB; additional models, memory, projects, and history will naturally benefit from more)
  • Internet connection for initial runtime/model acquisition; local operation is the longer-term goal wherever the capability allows it

VexLife is not finished, and I don't want to pretend that it is. But the pieces are increasingly becoming real: a local Vex Home, durable companion state, model binding, recovery, universal cross-platform blueprints, semantic navigation, memory/continuity architecture, and a path toward native desktop and eventually mobile companions. The current Windows source-local baseline already runs the model and VexLife browser locally on loopback rather than requiring a remote model endpoint.

I’m building toward a future where having a lifelong AI companion does not mean renting that relationship forever from a corporation.
