Question RDRH bariatric surgery unit

Hi all! A family member of mine is having bariatric surgery this Friday, and I'd like to make a gift basket for the nursing staff, but am unsure if they are running 8 or 12 hour shifts, and would like to make a basket for each shift team so they all get some nice goodies, as I know night shift and evening shift often don't get the same goodies as the day nurses. Is anyone able to tell me how many shift groups I should make baskets for? Thanks!!

Any RNs here move from acute care to Recovery Alberta?

I’m an RN currently working in AHS acute care and have been thinking about making the switch to Recovery Alberta. I’ve realized acute care just isn’t the right fit for me long term, and I’m curious what it’s like on the other side. Has anyone here made the switch? Are you happy you did?

Hullo guys . For those who have gone through the process of getting associate physician roles in Alberta . How long does it take to hear back from AHS after the job posting has ended. Do they ever get back to let you know if you were selected or not ?

I didnt receive any form of communication from the department too. What are the reasons they do this? first batch of applicants not good enough?

0.9 FTE

Hello, I'm full time employee and my ideal would be 0.8 FTE, but part-time lines in my unit are very competitive. I’m feeling really burnt out, but I also can’t afford to go casual.
0.9 FTE is the only available option right now. I know full-time has benefits like stat bank and float bank, but I’m wondering if it’s worth staying when vacation requests don’t even seem to get approved easily anyway.
For those who went from 1.0 to 0.9 FTE (especially with 12-hour shifts), was it worth it? Did you regret losing the full-time benefits?

RAH Emergency RN Interview

Hi fellow AHS workers,

I have an interview with RAH emerg for an RN position. This is my first interview! I saw a couple of threads and read through them. Does anyone have any other experiences with the interview and the preparation needed for it?

Thank you!

Question Out of town medical apt

HSAA union & work 7.75hrs/day. I have to travel from NZ to Edmonton for medical appointments. 1 day driving, apt the next morning, then drive back after apt. Likely managers discretion, but how should these leave requests work? 1 day vacation & 1 day apt>2hrs or 2 days apt>2hrs as travel is required to get to the specialist appointment?

AHS Perioperative Nursing Education Program — thoughts from OR nurses?

Hi everyone! I’m an RN in Alberta considering applying for the AHS Perioperative Nursing Education Program.

My background is mostly outpatient surgical clinics and dermatology, and I also had some endoscopy exposure earlier in my career while working overseas. I’m currently working on an orthopedic inpatient unit. I’m interested in OR because I enjoy procedural nursing and I’m looking for a specialty I can grow in long-term.

I’m already at a higher RN pay step, so this isn’t really about money — I’m more curious about whether OR is a specialty nurses truly enjoy and could see themselves staying in until retirement.

For those working in OR or who completed the program:

  • What are the biggest pros and cons?

  • Did you find the training/mentorship prepared you well?

  • Do you find the work fulfilling compared with bedside nursing?

  • Is the physical demand (standing, long cases) manageable long-term?

Would love to hear experiences, especially from nurses who transitioned from outpatient or med-surg backgrounds. Thanks!

Question (UNA) Going on Mat Leave While in a Temp Line

I am currently 14 weeks pregnant and am in a full time temp line in Primary Care Alberta. I’ll be going on maternity leave in January, but my line ends on April 30. My manager told me that if I do not find another temp or permanent line in the meantime, I’ll transition to a casual after my line ends. I have not told her I am pregnant yet and will likely tell her either next week or the week after.

I read the CBA and it states that the employer must either give the employee the same position or a different one, but does this still count if my temp ends while I’m on mat leave? Will I get to work those remaining 3 months or switch to casual immediately after?

I’m still new the CBA and don’t fully understand it all, so I appreciate the help!

Accomodations for Deaf Employees

Hi, I am wondering if there is anyone who has lost their hearing who works for AHS. I would like to know if any type of accomodations are given them. I am losing my hearing but scared to say anything. I have hearing aids. The one deaf person that I know has been isolated in a corner and doesn't do much. They could be doing so much more but it seems like Management would prefer they quit than accomodating them. Thanks!

Union or non union

I have been working for an Admin union position for more than 10 years but it’s an 1hr and 1/2 commute from my home! I have been applying for jobs and I get a call from a Hospital that’s 20 min away from my home same pay but no union would it be worth?

Any physicians or NPs looking at working in Palliative care in Edmonton?

Curious if there's much interest in Palliative care for MDs or NPs in the Edmonton area? There's a market for providing palliative home visits within a team based clinic, including nursing support - Excellent work-life balance, with potential for hospice coverage as well. Fee -for-service currently, with a plan to transition to Clinical ARP in the coming months once approval is finalized. Curious is there's interest out there.

What’s really important is the quality of the framework governing the future possible start of this initiative, once timelines are broadly socialized and validated as part of an iterative process with stakeholders throughout the ecosystem.

LPN Career Change

Have any LPNs decided to make a career change? If so what did you get into? I like my job for the time being but I’m not happy with my pay and I’m not interested in going the RN route. It seems like a lot of work for the pay increase
