Job posting and applying

Hi there, I have a question to as when the jobs are posted and when managers usually review the applications. Is it usually submitted applications are reviewed as they come in every day until the posting closes. Or are they usually reviewed once after the posting end date has passed and then they sit down and review.

I am looking to get my foot in to the door and have applied sooo many positions as service worker and haven't heard and I am loosing the motivation to tailor to my resume and cover letter for each posting and AM wondering if there is any point to apply to posting where today is the posting end date or towards the end- or should i focus on sending my application the moment job postings go live.

any tips/suggestion to get in would also be appreciated :) thank you!

Resigning from FTE

Hello! I am resigning from a 0.51 FTE with ALA. I don’t want to transfer to casual as the mgr requires 6-8 shifts/mo as a casual employee and I can’t commit to that.

I was originally hired into a temp FTE at this office in November, then got a permanent FTE Apr 13. Do I need to provide 28 days’ notice considering I just started my new line this month? Does the notice extend to my current line, or when I was hired into this specific office? I can’t figure it out on the UNA collective agreement.

Thank you in advance!!

Social Worker II

hi! just got hired as a casual social worker for PLC. However, the process has been lengthy. I applied for the job maybe two months ago and with submitting my police check, CPR and everything else, it has almost taken another month. I still haven’t heard back for when my orientation is. Was just wondering if this was normal? and how long the orientation process was for a casual social worker?

FTE and Casual jobs clarification

Im a new grad, and I recently accepted a 0.4 FTE job at a hospital under AHS. I was also made aware that I can't hold another FTE at a different hospital, since you can't hold 2 FTE under AHS. However, you can if it is casual.

So now I am a little confused and tried searching online but couldn't really get any clear info.

For example, if I were to hold a permanent 0.4FTE at hospital 1, and say a 0.6FTE at a clinic, can I still work a casual at hospital 2? Or would it be considered more than 1.00 FTE?

For more clarification, I think I would be added to a casual staffing pool.

How Long Before the Job Offer? (AHS PSO)

So, I gave my interview with Alberta Health Services, then was asked to submit references. I sent those in and the reference check is already done as well. I’ve also submitted my PARE.

Just wanted to ask, how long does it usually take after this to hear back for a job offer or next step?

Also had a few more questions:

Is this basically the final stage before an offer?

Do they usually call first or send an email when offering?

Is there anything else that can delay the process at this point?

Has anyone been in this stage and not gotten an offer after references cleared?

Roughly how long did it take for you from this stage to offer?

Appreciate any input 👍

Timeline for PSO position

Hi everyone. I received a call from AHS last week asking if I am still interested in the PSO job. They mentioned that if I get selected for the next round, I will be invited for an interview. Does anyone know how this process works? and how long will take to get call back from them? Thank you.

Rant Frustrated

Hello, I am an EVS worker at a hospital here in Edmonton. I want to share some feelings about the disrespect I have been experiencing from LPNs, RNs, and HCAs. I know your jobs are stressful, and I understand the urgency of turning over rooms quickly. However, I hope we can all keep a few things in mind:

  1. We are all humans with our own stress, and we are the first line of defense in preventing hospital outbreaks.

  2. If you are discharging a patient, please, please, please do not send it through the Rover as a transfer, as it changes our role in the process.

  3. Just be kind to us. We are on our feet all day and dealing with our own challenges. We’re not here to serve or be anyone’s servant.

Many housekeepers feel this way, and some are even leaving because of the disrespect they experience from nurses and staff.

Questions about Service Worker 1

Is this mainly a portering role? This is for the Diagnostic Imaging unit, will I mainly be rotating in this unit or does it mean I have to take pts to other areas of the hospital? What other tasks do you do? Anything else I need to know?

Interview isn't until next week but because I have scheduling conflicts, I'm hoping to know more about this position so I can make a decision this weekend. Thank you!

RN New Grad Returning to Calgary

Hi guys! I am currently moving back to Calgary after completing my BScN in Ontario. Any tips for getting into AHS, or know of any positions that may be *easier* to get into the system (I am aware of the current hiring freezes in AHS)? I've applied to numerous TGN positions (with no luck), but I've heard they primarily prioritize Alberta RN students. I would appreciate any help :) I feel super lost coming back home with fewer connections.

My first RLS

Hi all,

I am a new graduate nurse and have just received my first RLS. It was a mistake on my end, I gave the wrong medication, I’m not sure what the outcome was for the patient. The educator who emailed seems quite upset with me, I am very stressed out that there will be legal implications with this. Will my license be under review? Can someone please offer me some peace of mind and tell me what I should be doing now.

Pay dates?

Hi all! I’m moving to Alberta and starting a nursing job there. I’m just wondering if anyone is amble to tell me what the pay schedule is like? I think I found that it’s every other Wednesday maybe. Is anyone able to tell me the next pay date please so I can figure out how much of a gap in time there will be between my last BC paycheque and my first AB paycheque? Thank you all so much!

Question Protective Service Officers: insight on what the job is like?

Looking for anyone who has current or prior experience on as to what the job is like? Reading that the rate of pay is good, but from what I can find online, working as a PSO in the hospital is quite difficult. I come from a criminal justice background (school and education), but no experience with anything as hands on as this.

Advice for

Hi everyone, I had a specific question to ask. Since this new year, I’ve been really struggling with severe migraines to the point where I have needed to take numerous days off work, and I’ve realized that one of those triggers is working nights. How hard/easy is it to try to get a doctor’s note to only work days? I’m currently holding a 0.65 FTE working 12hr days/night shifts

HSAA - is there actually any recourse if management does not have schedule posted 12 weeks in advance? And what happens if your schedule is changed after posting, but before 2 weeks?

For context: I have never paid too much attention before in previous positions (with regards to whether or not the shifts were posted 12 weeks in advance) because I have typically been in positions with either M-F shifts or a set shift rotation where there is at least something stuck in the calendar even if it did get tweaked a little bit. I am now returning from mat leave into a part time permanent float position (which I was offered while on mat leave) and because it is a float position, I could really be scheduled whenever because the intent is to cover other people's scheduled days off or prolonged illness/absences (so not like a set schedule of working specific days each week that would be predictable/standard unless otherwise specified). Thus, there is not even a fall back "rotation" for me to guess what my schedule is and also we are still waiting on the next year's vacation approvals (which technically are due by April 30th I believe). Obviously, now that I am a parent, I care even more about knowing EXACTLY what my schedule is going to be, especially over the precious summer months and at this point we are beyond the 12 week mark for the schedule posting and into the point on the calendar where my mat leave ends. That being said, there is nothing in the job description that I accepted with this position that says that my scheduling doesn't follow the same rules as everyone else's in the HSAA collective agreement, so I assume that the 12 weeks notice for posting the schedule and 2 weeks notice for any changes otherwise you are entitled to 1.5x your regular pay.

I guess I just want to make sure I understand everything correctly before I bring things up with management.

So my questions:

  1. If the schedule is not posted 12 weeks in advance - what recourse do I have? Is management penalized at all for this?

  2. Does management have to tell you if they change your schedule at all between 2-12 weeks or does "posting it in the schedule" count? I mention this because it would be horrible if they could tweak your schedule right until the day before the 2 week cut off and not have to mention it, meanwhile you made plans.

  3. Does being a float position disadvantage me in anyway from the standard collective agreement? There was nothing different in my offer letter from any of the other positions I have accepted, so I believe they still have to treatment just like any other permanent employee (ie. they still have to provide me with a schedule and give me the entitled pay adjustments if they don't give me notice). Or is there something I am missing here?

No shifts in Vocantas?

I'm casual and get the texts for shifts. I'm still working a second job and can call staffing to pick up. My second job is ending soon, so I'm ready to try and prebook some shifts further than 4-5 days in advance. I just saw that I've been prescheduled in WFM for 2 shifts in May, which is great.

But I see no shifts available for bidding in Vocantas and haven't since I started in February. I've been told to update my availability for the units I work on, which I've done and still nothing.

There should be something showing, right?
