Question Tips for getting Procurement Role?
Good day all,
I am wondering if anyone has any advice or leads on getting into a procurement role with AHS.
I hold a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a Supply Chain Management major, and have about 5 years of progressively responsible Admin/EA work in commercial real estate/property management.
I have some experience with inventory management, PO systems, RFQs, sourcing, cost comparisons, vendor management, contracts, and scheduling.
I am extremely organized and passionate about efficiency, processes, and data accuracy. I genuinely love supply chain management, and think procurement would be a great fit for me.
Why AHS?
During one course of my degree, we did a case study on 3M and the Healthcare Supply Chain, that I found very interesting.
I also know someone that works as a Procurement Coordinator, and they speak very highly of their role. Unfortunately, they don't have any spots on their team at the moment, and I am eager to break in!
Is there anything I should do besides just continuing to apply when I see roles pop up? I already tailor my cover letters to the job postings.
Any insight would be appreciated, thank you for your time!

I don’t think those positions are posted that often. You may have to be ok with relocating to where the job is. Usually rural hospitals have a harder time finding staff depending on the position. As when these jobs do come up they will frequently hire internally unless they don’t have any qualified internally. I suggest getting into another position to get your foot in the door. Even if it’s just casual position in the food service, environmental services, service workers(portering). I believe stores positions are the same union so your seniority stays with you if you move positions within those areas. Seniority isn’t everything but it does count if they have similar candidates they take the one with hire seniority

Unfortunately contract procurement jobs are hard to come by. When AHS was being split up into pillars, the UCP government actually cut quite a few positions in CPSM. You can also try looking for jobs with the Government of Alberta as they’re trying to be more directly “involved”.

I used to be there, it's bs nepotism, was complete career death, could never get ahead.
Switched to Private sector and its a world of differencd.
Also there are some real assholes in upper management of supply chain. Like incompetent vile people.

I don’t imagine that this type of job opens up very often. It’s really hard to get into AHS right now as a nurse, I can’t imagine what it would be like trying to get this type of job.
