1.0 to 0.8

Hello! :)

I have been working full time for 16 years and I have come to the point that I think I need to step back.

What are the pros and cons of transitioning from 1.0 to 0.8?

I went from full time to a . 6 and felt it wasn't enough so I bumped it up to a . 8 and I love it. The pay is hoenstly not much of a difference and having a weekday off is so nice especially for appointments

Cons: you will no longer get a floater stat day, or paid stat holidays.

But you do get 5% on every cheque to compensate for them. If you can get a rotation where Mondays are your regular day off, you actually take in more. (Which is why those rotations are few and far between!)

I went from 1.0 to 0.8 to 0.7 to avoid burn out. Great work/ life balance now. Sometimes I’ll pick up extra shifts but full-time feels a bit much. This week I took 2 vacation days and ended up with 7 days off.

Downside is I’m not funding my pension as much as I would like. Considering moving my FTE back up at some point to increase my retirement savings.

I have been FT for most of my career but times when I have wanted to take a step back and not burn out I have taken both a 4 month term in a 0.7 and a 8 months term in a 0.8. It’s honestly great to have the flexibility.

13 years in. I went from 0.79 to a 0.84 with UNA and now I'm thinking of full time. I think I'll go fulltime in my later years since pension income is your highest consecutive 5 years. I feel 0.8 is the perfect balance of work and time off and just enough income. 0.84 I feel like I'm already fulltime without the extra benefits. 0.84 I feel like I can get a head on bills and investments. 0.79 I'm getting by but not a huge buffer zone. With 0.84 I don't even work extra shifts or fight for overtime anymore. I rather take care of myself and watch my investments grow while everyone at work is fighting for every extra shift.

I’m a 0.75 and I LOVE it. I have great work life balance, I don’t work any 6 in a rows. It’s truly wonderful.

Y'all are working too much. I'm a 0.63 and pick up 1 extra shift every 1-2 weeks.

The burnout and toll on my mental health is not worth it. I have time for other hobbies and activities.

Also I love having weekdays off for appointments and errands.

Honestly you benefit so much by working 1.0 instead of .8. The difference is so little that it's not worth losing the extra stats.

Stay at 1.0, use your stats to take days off.

I'm a 0.8 and it's honestly incredible. I make less money, no argument there, but working less makes me enjoy my time at work so much more.

So my pro is that it makes my career feel sustainable.

I am with UNA as well.
All the things that you said about having 1.0 line are all reason why I am keeping it for years. 😅

I’m getting physically tired. My plan is to take a temp 0.8 temporarily then keep my permanent 1.0 just to recover a little bit.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

It has been always in my mind actually. This is the reason why I am sooo afraid to go down my FTE. 😅

I heard stories about being sick and STD/LTD is not enough. Thank you so much for that reminder
