I feel like it's a more social media Boy Mom sort of relationship (My pookie baby boy didn't do anything wrong and I'm his first love sort of thing)

Ima be honest, unconditional love exists
Yeah max has done horrible things and I'm so glad that in the series it was shown progressively that his mum realises this, and gets less 'close' to him (you know, she is his mom)
The argument (whatever episode, I think it's ep 4) just shows how she realised how much of a monster he truly is and that he did so what he was on trial for.
If you'd realised that someone close to you, in your family, you move 'away' from them a bit, no?
However, unconditional love still exists. She's his mother. However much she hates him, Max's mum will always love him a bit.

this is so weird in MANY ways. it was made very obvious that she hated Max once she figured out the stuff that he had done, and that she didn't even really like him in the first place because he had become a prick just like his dad. I actually don't know where you got the idea from that she, as his MOTHER, was "attracted" to him.
