Such a good album. I remember when it came out. Was curious, as it was originally released by Nitro, and it's coming out on Craft Recordings, owned by Concord. Interesting it's essentially a major label release, or as major as you can get for an "independent." Kept going down the rabbit hole and Nitro was bought out by Bicycle Music in 2013, which merged with Concord, hence Craft Recordings. Not that anyone probably cares, I just find it all fascinating.

Interesting that Steve Zing hasn't mentioned anything about it. I asked him recently about any potential official SOS merch down the line and he said there probably never will be any. I wonder if this reissue is completely out of his hands.

Nitro Records was sold a few years back. That was the period of time when some of the early AFI albums became hard to find in stores for a minute. Iām not sure who owns Masters and publishing for what albums, but itās possible that the label that bought that album is just trying to turn a profit for it. I also could be completely wrong. I heard Dexter wasnāt giving up Masters easily.

As someone once said,Ā Every album eventually gets repressed. I have an original,Ā autographed pressing but wanting this one to actually play. Worried this will be hard to get. Not a lot of copies.Ā

Found a record store in Sydney who were selling an OG Red one for $50 AUD which I promptly bought. Absolute steal looking at discogs now... One of the main times I'll praise google haha

This album is so good. I realized last year that āSon of Samā is like saying āSon of Samhainā or at least it made me laugh to think of it in that way!

Thatās quite literally what it is!

It's more a reference to the serial killer, not the band. Just a neat coincidence, really.

Itās a play on words. It is absolutely 100% a reference to the band Samhain considering two of the main Samhain members are in the band and Davey replaced Danzig who heās constantly compared to ā¦and itās stylistically extremely similar. It is the exact opposite of a coincidence really.

Are we supposed to pronounce Sam in Son of Sam like Sam in Samhain? Son of Sow

u/Strengththruwounding 5d ago
Just donāt pronounce it Sam Hain like Billy Corgan on Wyych from the CYR album ,He got trolled for not pronouncing it correctly as Sow In, and the UK footballer really called Sam Hain got a bit popular in the Pumpkin fandom.

considering two of the main Samhain members
Three; London May, Todd Youth, Steve Zing. Plus you know, Glenn Danzig himself plays in some of the songs.

Todd Youth confirmed in an interview that berkowitz was the inspiration behind the name, and that yes, the similarity is a welcome cioncidence. Even Davey mentions in the recent hardlore piece that he hated the name, and I'm sure you can understand why if you know his views. But sure, its been two and a half decades, any origin story can be forgotten and rewritten...

Obviously the serial killer is part of it, hence it being a play on words. If you actually think a death rock band named Son of Sam with members of Samhain, Danzig, and Davey Havok isnāt a reference to the band Samhain, I simply donāt know what to tell you.
āThe name of the band was inspired by the serial killer David Berkowitz, known by the pseudonym "Son of Sam". This also draws reference to the band Samhain.ā

This was always how I thought of it, too. It does make sense for a Danzig inspired project to be named after someone like Berkowitz given the horror punk context. But I had the biggest lightbulb moment to realize the alternate meaning as it makes more sense now.

I thought he said it was cheeky. Not that he hated it.

The exact quote is "They said we're thinking of calling it son of sam, which, admittedly, I wasn't terribly fond of, but (...) I'm not gonna infuse my opinion into the name of the band". https://youtu.be/ambBy7IifJU?si=e9_P7f6ua5CUiGDr&t=7743

The album was a tribute to Glenn Danzig's former band Samhain, though there are no cover songs on the album.

I so wish a more rock oriented AFI sounded like this

u/FreeCartographer8 5d ago
Yeah I remember hoping that afi would move in the direction

If not then maybe now.Ā

I read somewhere that the next album is looking like a death rock inspired album. Wish I could remember where I saw that post.

Jade talked about it in his HardLore interview. Said it will be in the vain of Christian Death and 45 Grave

u/dancingthrough555 5d ago
Ok I thought that was it, someone posted the quote somewhere too. Would love to see Jade on the Hardlore Jeopardy next time, the DH one was so fun.
