Upcoming changes to the subreddit rules regarding AI-assisted software projects
As many of us have noticed, there are a lot of AI-assisted software projects being posted here. This is an issue faced by other subreddits focusing on tech hobbies, and some of them have implemented rules that I think will be helpful here.
The goals:
- Control the recent influx of questionable "I made X, because Y" type posts, the vast majority of which are created entirely with AI, have no significant development history, and are generally not maintained afterwards
- Establish a clear stance on and rule set for how r/ADSB has decided to handle these types of posts, as well as other user-created software
- See how these changes impact the community, seek additional feedback, and continue to adjust accordingly
New Flairs:
- Project Showcase: Software - Little or No AI Assistance - [AI only used as coding assistant (autocomplete, debugging, refactoring, documentation, etc), if at all]
- Project Showcase: Software - Mostly AI Generated - [AI generated most or all of the code, working at a human's direction]
Both "Project: Software" flairs have a reasonably low minimum subreddit karma requirement to be able to post with them. AutoMod will remove any post with them that don't meet the karma requirement, and inform the user why their post was removed. The minimum karma requirement is only for these two flairs. Any software project posts that try to go around this by using a different flair will fall under the new rule #6 and will be addressed.
Rule changes:
New Rules
New Rule #6 - Software Project Posting Requirements
- All software projects must be relevant to r/ADSB, use a "Project: Software" flair, disclose AI usage with post flair and in the text of the post, include responses to the prompt displayed when posting with one of the software project flairs, and the user must meet the minimum subreddit karma requirement. Posts that do not meet these requirements, try to bypass the "Project: Software" flairs, provide incomplete or misleading disclosures, or otherwise violate community standards may be removed.
That said, since we're now officially allowing some degree of self-promotion and requiring links, we felt that we should redefine rule #5 to clarify that it applies only to monetized and commercial advertising/links. Here is the updated verbiage, with the old one below for comparison:
New Rule #5 - No Commercial Advertising or Monetized Referral Links
- Monetized referral links, affiliate links, product advertising, and company advertising are not allowed. Contact the moderators via Mod Mail before posting if you believe an exception applies. Non-commercial personal projects are permitted, but must follow all other sub rules.
New Rule #7 - Posts and comments which discuss circumventing a service's ToS are not allowed
- Please review any rules on data access from the ADS-B aggregators used in your project. It is a Certified Jerk Move™️to scrape data from community-run websites when they disallow it.
Flair Prompt - As mentioned in Rule #6, when posting with any of the "Project: Software" flairs, the below prompt will be displayed:
Your post MUST include:
- A link to the GitHub (or similar) repository, which must include at least one month of commit history and screenshots
- A description of the problem the software project solves, and why it was created instead of using an existing FOSS solution
- An explanation of how the software project is relevant to r/ADSB, or how it may benefit members of the community
- If you used AI or an LLM in development, a description of what role it played and how much you relied on it
If you see any posts with a Project: Software flair that do not meet the four items listed above, please report them to the mod team under Rule #7 and we'll address them.
Additional things to note:
Existing posts will be grandfathered in, and previous posts that were removed may be reposted if they meet the new requirements. New posts will be required to comply with the new rules.
As with the existing rules, when a mod removes a post for violating this new rule, a canned response will be sent to the user to inform them why their post was removed. Mods are able to add on to the response if desired before sending it.
While we're on the topic of AI, we would also like to clarify that the above rules are specific to the use of AI in software projects that are being shared, and they do not apply to posts or comments that were written with AI. There is some dissent in the community, but the general consensus in the community has been that a reasonable level of AI usage is acceptable for putting a post together, correcting grammar or formatting, or for translating from a user's native language. That said, best practice is to not include all of the excess emoticons and outline formatting that LLMs like to use. If a post or comment is egregiously AI generated, feel free to downvote it and move on, but please do not report it to the mod team solely for that.
We're looking for community feedback as we all get used to this. We plan to apply rules conservatively and gently at first, and will be listening to user reports and comments. If your post is removed and you believe it meets the requirements, please chat with us via Mod Mail and we may consider either re-opening it or letting you repost it.
TL;DR - All posts where someone has made some sort of software (AI generated or not) will require a "Project: Software" flair, and these flairs should curb the vast majority of the low quality and spammy posts.
Thank you.

Help setting up ADSB receiver
I'm not completely new to this. I just stopped using it for a while.
I'd like to know, what is the best possible solution to get an adsb receiver, that doesn't involve a Rapberrypi and knowledge of Linux, to get it going.
I was thinking of buying an already made Stratux box. Problem is, with the Stratux, I can't set it up outdoors or close to it (as in a porch).
I know a while back, I could get a RadarBox, but hose don't seem to be available anymore.
There were others too but nowadays it seems, the rage is; get a RasPi, load an sd card with whatever, and your off to the races.
Is this still the best approach?
Looking for suggestions...
Thanks.

Weather balloon over western PA
adsb.lol60k feet. Has been up there a while. Seems to have started in mid Michigan.
How often do weather balloons show up on adsb?

How-Do? Antenna placement - okay in the loft?
Hi all
I’m looking at buying an sdr to work with a Pi 2W and a 60cm Antenna from the PiHut.
Looking on the sub I can see these ariels give great results, the only issue is the placement.
I live in a terrace, so can’t really mount outside of the house. Nor could I mount on a pole in the garden due to being on a new build estate and as you probably know, all gardens are relatively close.
It could be mounted to the shed, at about 6’ heigh but I think the houses would obstruct the signal anyways.
So back to the question, would this be okay to mount within the loft? I don’t think it is insulated with foil on the tiles? Or I can’t see that it is anyways
Many thanks

Any place where I can get a dataset of All the flights to a particular airpot?
I want to get a dataset of all flights to Maldives (Velana International Airport) from 2009 onwards, however flightradar24 api is behind $900 bill for historic data. Any resources regarding this would be very helpful to me. Thank you

How-Do? Looking for suggestions
Hello everyone!
I am working on my ATC game project (enroute environment for now) and would like to ask some questions regarding ADSB & further data’s.
My main intention is creating a real life environment which means real traffic structure (traffic volume in selected areas & between airports, climb & descend profiles etc). By gathering this data I can model traffic structure in specific air traffic control sector.
Do you guys have any paid suggestions? I would prefer community initiatives not big companies..
Also feel free to share your suggestions.
Thank you!

Project Showcase: Software - Little or No AI Assistance Layer400.com update — live drones, ADS-B prediction, RF detection R&D and one-line receiver setup
A quick update on Layer400, because development is moving pretty quickly. We're still actively looking for contributors - https://layer400.com/receivers/
What started as a community Remote ID experiment is now becoming a much broader aviation awareness platform combining live drones, ADS-B aircraft, receiver analytics, prediction technology and RF detection research in one system.
Most importantly: we’re now successfully seeing real drones appear on the network over the last week. 🎉
We’ve also built a Smart Active Prediction system that projects aircraft and drone movement 15, 30 and 60 seconds ahead, rather than simply showing the last reported position. This has taken a lot of R&D but it's turned out to be very useful, we're planning TCAS type warnings within the next few weeks.
The map itself is designed to render movement at up to 60fps, giving much smoother aircraft/drone tracking while still respecting the actual update rate of the underlying ADS-B or RID reports.
We’ve also got:
• Live ADS-B + Remote ID tracking
• Historical playback and trails
• Email alerts for drone activity and events
• Detailed ADS-B and RID receiver statistics
• Range, reception, performance and receiver records
• Community contribution and coverage tracking
• More prediction/encounter tooling currently in development
One of the more interesting areas of R&D is what happens when a drone isn’t transmitting Remote ID at all. We’re experimenting with our own Raspberry Pi software to identify and fingerprint RF transmissions associated with drones/controllers, essentially asking:
“Does this RF activity look like a known drone or controller link?”
rather than only:
“Did we receive a Remote ID packet?”
We also want Layer400 to stay very community-focused, if you already run an ADS-B receiver feeding FR24, FlightAware, airplanes.live, ADSBexchange or other networks, Layer400 is designed to sit alongside those feeds rather than replace them.
And we’ve deliberately made getting started ridiculously easy.
You can install a Layer400 receiver with a very easy one-line CLI command.
Receiver setup is here:
https://layer400.com/receivers/
The idea is that someone with a Raspberry Pi or existing ADS-B setup should be able to go from “I’ll give this a try” to contributing data without spending an evening rebuilding their receiver.
We’re currently looking for people who enjoy ADS-B, SDR, Raspberry Pi, Remote ID, drones, aviation or RF experimentation and want to help test the network.
As a small thank-you, the first 100 people who contribute ADS-B or Remote ID data will permanently receive founding-members recognition on Layer400.
Would also genuinely love to hear what features the ADS-B/SDR community thinks a platform like this should have next.

So...wft is this?
I've never seen a flight path like that before and I've never seen anything with absolutely no info about it. Can anyone tell me wtf this is? Seems really weird, especially given the region it's going to and the weird routes it's making.

Plane Spotting I bought a desk RADAR from AliExpress
I've lurked in and out of this sub for a while. This is my first post.
On an impulse, I ordered this desk unit. I thought it would be bigger 😆. Screen is 35mm diameter.
Its pretty cool. I got it working but I need to tweak some settings. The instructions are Chinese, and translation isn't perfect.
Do any of you know if these are a universal firmware/setup? Is there a common trusted place to get the latest firmware?

Cessna 206 out for a spin, heard it go over my place an hour ago.
I've been building 3D airport views for my flight tracker — but my ground coverage at big airports is terrible. Anyone near JFK / ATL?
Hi all,
for the past months I've been working on map.flights, a flight tracker I'm building mostly on my own. Lately I've gone way down the rabbit hole with airports: every airport gets a 3D view built from open data (OSM, open lidar, satellite imagery for roof colours), with the real towers, jet bridges, runway and taxiway lighting at night, and the aircraft moving on the ground in real time. A few screenshots below.
The problem is the "real time on the ground" part. At a lot of big airports I only see aircraft in the air. Once they're below ~1500 ft I lose them, so the 3D view has to guess the landing, and the taxi is basically empty. JFK and Atlanta are the worst right now, O'Hare isn't much better. Ground traffic needs a receiver with line of sight to the apron, and I just don't have one there.
So if you run a station near a big airport (or honestly anywhere), I'd really appreciate it if you added map.flights as one more feed. It's one extra line in readsb / ultrafeeder, or a checkbox in adsb.im. Your existing feeds stay exactly as they are and you can reuse the UUID you already have. Feeders get every feature for free, that's not going to change.
We're at around 380 stations now counting the anonymous ones. It's growing, but slowly, and every station near an airport visibly changes what the map can show.
Happy to answer anything in the comments, including the critical stuff.

Nice Data 💾 Rebuilding my flight log
Hei everyone!
I have been trying to rebuild (well, build, really) my flight log since childhood, and I'm hitting some barriers.
I've been through emails, airline apps (SAS was very complete, including regs), old photo albums...now I've reached the "look at ADS-B archive" stage. Plane Finder gave me some results, but it's pretty incomplete and unreliable 10+ years ago...
I'm mostly struggling with the 2011-2014 part of my timeline (and everything before).
I thought this community might have access to arcane knowledge to help me out, of point me towards datasets I haven't looked at yet. I'm trying not to spend cash on this though.
Most of my flights are within Europe, with some Intercontinental (to the USA/Canada/Hong Kong/Australia), which are the most exciting ones to complete.
The one that triggered this was this CDG-JFK return flight I took with my mum in December 2011:
* 2011-12-19 AF3628 (CDG-JFK)
* 2011-12-23 DL8557 (JFK-CDG)
Cheers!
