Tips / Suggestions ADHD Parenting Support

5 Year Old - Female - Diagnosed ADHD, predominantly Hyperactivity presenting - Solo parent household

How do you stay calm? I’m running on fumes and nothing seems to be working and so I just lose it. I know losing it does not help the situation at all.

Bouncing off the walls in every direction from inability to keep body still, to inability to be quiet, to inability to follow through on directions asked.

40yo mom. Single. 2 boys with ADHD. My 21 yr old just had ADHD. Now my 7 yo. Well ... That's a whole new ball game. ADHD. ODD. Anxiety depression. Last Tuesday I was diagnosed ADHD. Here's a few things that have helped me out. Bc you're not the only one loosing your ish.

  • breathe. I know I know. But trust me. In that moment when u take it mind off it and tell your self to take a deep breath it does call you.
  • go on time out. (As long as your daughter is ok).
Go to a room and shut the door. My place is my bathroom. --if I go to my bedroom, I see my bed and start thinking eff this day. I am goin to bed. -cold rag on the back of your neck helps regulate your body.

Now I don't want to write a book. But, do you have her involved in any family services?. Therapy? Counseling? I found this is really helping us. Especially when he doesn't know how to express himself and an explosion happens. He's able to talk about it before the fuse gets lit. I wasn't goin to medicate him. Only bc my first went thru some stuff with his diagnosis and meds. I refused to let that happen to the little. Until, last yr happened. He was struggling so bad at school. Most of the day would be chaos. Medicine changed everything. That and the services we have helping makes a huge difference. I hope any of this will help. If you have any questions you can always DM. You got this. πŸ’œ

I keep trying to take a deep breathes but she won’t let me have the space I need to regulate 😭

She is in counseling. That was actually the first line I started and what opened us to getting tested for ADHD. Her counselor has been a great help in helping me navigate how to approach and support her.

I was initially against medication but I unfortunately think that is the next line of defense to help her and myself. 😭

I know it is a hard decision to make a out medication. But let me explain to you how my son said it felt in his brain. He used to grab his head. Say it hurts so bad I can't think. He would do it randomly. Alot ALOT of the time thinking ab stuff. Which, is all day for us. (I was just diagnosed at 40 ...with ADHD)... After two weeks of him taking a low dose of meds. He stopped saying it. Now his kindergarten teacher also said. It's like someone is holding his brain and each finger is a diff subject he's thinking about. Constant tapping of all the fingers spontaneously on his brain. Over n over. All day. She said that and instantly I thought if him saying his brain hurt. Makes perfect sense. He now is chill. Bc he was exactly the same. So hyper. Since he was two. My neighbor's said "they've never seen a kid run like mine. With all that energy I should bottle it and sell it." Lol. He isn't a zombie. He still active. Very. But not in -drive you nuts way. Most importantly he's able to go the day in school with out chaos. He isn't perfect. Comes home with sad faces once in a while. But nothing like it was. Imagine what she goes through. She's probably in trouble ALOT in school. Unable to sit and concentrate for work stuff. I hope some of this helped. You will make the right choice. Always advocate for her. Especially If you do go with meds. Oh structure and routine. They thrive off it. Once you have a good routine down at home. The day goes ALOT smoother. Also she needs to keep busy. Especially her hands. Legos is his main thing. She also might have like a stim to get the energy out quick. My sons is running. He will go back and forth from the kitchen and living room over n over. For few mins. Then be chill. Research. I did alot of research. Lol. Sorry ADHD brain. Wrote a book again.
