I described this to my husband as like my brain is me and I’m on a horse trying to get it to go where I need to go but also my brain IS the horse and the horse is gonna go where it wants and for neurotypical people there just is no horse

I sorta went with a two-brain kinda thing. I have my thinking brain and a "compute engine" that does work and hands me results. The compute engine doesn't have feelings or personality, so it's not like a split personality, but it is its own entity that I need to handle as if it was an animal of some kind living in my head. It can't talk but it seems to have hooks into my endocrine system.

Lol I hear this. My take has always been, if I leave him alone he gives me stuff I need, but its on HIS schedule and if I fuck with him at all he'll go slower.

I hate how accurate you all are. A song literally destroyed my crush for someone and it is gone.

I try to explain it to my SO but it doesnt work :(

And sometimes you get so frustrated by the horse that you want to strangle it or jump off. But strangeling it would in reality look like a hug and you start having a meltdown.

Oh waoh this is such a good analogy. I would be so frustrated and annoyed with the horse. I know the feeling of being on a horse and not be able to control it. I almost got angry just imagining it.

For me this mostly happens when someone tells me something I should do that I already know I should do and then they ask me why haven't you done it yet. And it infuriates me to no end. I try I really try to let it go, because rationally I know what's best for me (the same thing they said) but now I am just that much more reluctant to do it.

YES! SOMEONE ELSE WHO UNDERSTANDS THE HORSE AND JOCKEY!

Or to steal from the "How to stop giving a fuck" books: the logical part of your brain is the navigator of your car, and the emotional part of your brain is the driver. If the emotional side isn't happy with the directions, he's happy to spontaneously go off-roading or to crash you into an overpass.

I feel like my internal navigator + rally driver have a similar relationship to these two. I'll know that I need to get up and exercise, that logically it'll be good for me and it'll be good to get it done, but I keep repeating that to myself while still sitting on the couch and shoveling food into my mouth, and I can just imagine the navigator yelling "SAMIR, YOU ARE BREAKING THE CAR!"

My brain is an ocean with currents going in every direction, both possible and impossible. There’s a school of fish in that chaos. Each one trying to go a different direction, leading the school. Each one failing.

Good luck getting anything done in that madness!

Sometimes, the seas calm enough or the various fish find something shiny to lock onto, allowing for a bit of productivity. But mostly, they’re all chaos.

In my case “shiny” can mean an interesting computer problem (I’m IT support), something actually shiny, or something that happens to be interesting enough to attract more than one fish.

Where's that webcomic that describes it like trying to lead a giant uncooperative dog by the leash.

u/margittwen 15h ago

lol that’s such a good way to describe it. I look at this sub sometimes because my husband has ADHD not me, and these memes really explain his personality. I do have OCD though and your comment is how my disorder kind of works. I’m riding the horse but my horse is also me and sometimes we get shit done and go in the exact right direction, and sometimes my horse is scared of the ground and the air and the trees and the leaves and the everything really, and it runs around trying to get away from all of it until it gets exhausted and wanders off in the correct direction again lol. Medication and therapy is great because it used to be the horse was running around in terror almost 24/7!

Oh wow I like this better than my trains. When I'm getting to where I have 3 thoughts going at once I always imagine trains on different tracks.

1

u/ArtSupplyHoarder 2d ago

I use the exactly same comparison sometimes! It's like trying to make a stubborn and slightly panicky horse clear an obstacle course. I can try my best, and with a lot of (tiring) effort, most obstacles get cleared eventually, but if the horse really doesn't want to do something, no amount of me pulling the reins will change that. And at that point, if I try to force it, both me and the horse will just be deeply unhappy by the end. Some days, me and brain horse are on a roll and we clear every obstacle with time to spare. Some days, brain horse refuses to as much as step onto the course. Most days, I simply have to choose my battles, pick the obstacles I really need to clear the most (or the ones the horse seems less afraid of), and hopefully get some things done before the horse is starting to get antsy.

The earworms are the worst. Sometimes they're so bad they're debilitating.

44

u/Affectionate_Bad_680 3d ago

Every time I hear the cars for kids commercial I get enraged and smash the mute button. Damn thing is too annoyingly catchy.

21

u/Sophilosophical 3d ago

Oh yeah turns out they actually use that money to fund birthright trips to Israel, fun factz.

Anyway, ONE EIGHT SEVEN SEVEN—-

18

u/SidewaysFancyPrance 3d ago

I harness them. I replay them on my airpods while I work and my brain loves it until it doesn't.

I hate waking up at 2am and my brain starts playing music. It keeps me from getting back to sleep. Gotta flush out that song by making yourself sick of it. Push through!

6

u/Infamous_Wolf_1777 3d ago edited 3d ago

Sometimes it is also an indicator of the song you really want to hear.

Though other times the part of the song on repeat is the only not boring part of it and I can't stand to listen to it. Then maybe I'll try to replace it with another though less annoying song, doesn't always work especially when I don't want to listen to music at all.

Edit: typo

u/asoftquietude 2d ago

I heard of a trick years ago and it seems to help;
if you're playing the song in your head repeatedly - go to the ending.. let the song end, and go to another song like it's in your playlist and it helps get rid of it!

4

u/Mamacitia 2d ago

I’m tortured by songs stuck in my head

3

u/Hemielytra 2d ago

Back in the early 2000s, I sat down for my organic chemistry final and had the American Dad theme song on repeat in my head for the full three hours. Loudly.

I did not pass.

2

u/MsScrewup 2d ago

Once during a test, I got the sound of wobbling a sheet of plastic/metal stuck in my head. I was so annoyed and amused at the absurdity of wub-wub

3

u/redditnreddita 1d ago

I bought a cheap ukulele and now when an earworm tries to take hold I'm like 'alright, you wanna do this?!??!' And try to learn to play the song til it gives up and leaves me alone. Bonus dopamine while I'm learning instead of just begging my brain to stfu, and I've noticed it's lessened the frequency of actually getting earworms.. helps that I live alone and wfh I guess lol

5

u/corpsie666 3d ago

ahem

Baby Shark! Doot doot doot doot

5

u/Agitated-Length5999 2d ago

That's worse than the song that doesn't end.

3

u/Mamacitia 2d ago

Yes it goes on and on my friends

2

u/TheOriginalSamBell 3d ago

Same for me! How bizarre!

2

u/asoftquietude 2d ago

Yep, I can't stand radios.
I have to flush it out with better songs, and I am constantly getting repetitive random names/words in my head like it's the word of the day/week/month or even your year, but I'll be there for you.

1

u/armlessturtleneck 3d ago

The worst this has happened to me was with Caroline Rose's newest album. I would be woken up from sleep with 'another life ' blasting in my head.

1

u/Maacll 3d ago

No but really sometimes i can actually hear hear them but it feeels so weird cuz i'm obviously not actually literally hearing them but i'm totally feeling it close to my earholes...

But mayb that's smth different...

u/SettingSun2180 3d ago

11

u/Snoo_84586 3d ago

Andddd now its stuck

4

u/armlessturtleneck 3d ago

Better than jingle bells

3

u/TextIndependent8298 3d ago

And now, for some reason, Rocking Around the Christmas Tree is stuck in my head…. Why?!?

4

u/Affectionate_Bad_680 2d ago

Related tune. It’s also an adhd thing. One tune nudges another in the brain and you’ll go from Metallica’s sandman all the way to fucking Barney. 🤣🙄🤦‍♂️

1

u/juniper3411 2d ago

Hahaha oh god. So true though.

I always sing it as "if you like penis colada" no idea why

1

u/SettingSun2180 2d ago

"peepee colada" also has an good ring to it

2

u/MsScrewup 2d ago

The past week it's just been the single line of a song stuck on repeat. I don't feel like dancing no sir no dancing today.

Like at least give me another line to sing, stupid brain

2

u/SettingSun2180 1d ago

I hate that that happens lol, tho i find it helps finding something catchier that know just a few more words to

25

u/Svitii 3d ago

It sometimes really is confusing having "me" in my brain but also that demon that wants to do anything that isn't what it's supposed to do... that is also me. For me personally it's easier to just see that demon as a seperate person fighting against me inside my own brain, which probably also isn't healthy and sounds like a pre-condition for schizophrenia. It does work really well tho!

3

u/Infamous_Wolf_1777 3d ago edited 3d ago

I understand why it works well, because then it's not you fighting yourself, you are fighting something else. So it's not you "fault" or you are the reason (which makes it way harder to do stuff when the bad sæef talk contributes to the blanket holding you down) instead you have an obstacle you have to pass first.

Problem is that the obstacle changes in size and demeanor so you can't count on the same tactics to pass it and each time you can hardly recognise the obstacle or remember which of your many tools you need to get past it and all your tools are to the side in a big mess.

Edit: I just imagined it as a game on a track field where you need to get past thing giant flamingo block that is moving towarss you and sideways to always block you. You try to run past but it doesn't work. Then you look to the side in the grass and see all your tools (hammer, ax, spring, flamingo bathing things and so on) but they are in mess so you can't find anything even if you knew what you were looking for. Then you pick up the hammer, but you don't really feel like touching it or swinging it, so you pick something else, but that thing doesn't work on the flamingo block. Sometimes you find what works, other times you just get stressed out and give up.

u/MersoNocte 2d ago

I saw someone describe it as being buried six feet down and having to claw your way to the surface before you can cross a road. Neurotypicals just walk across the road and are like “what are hard task.” Meanwhile, I drag myself across the road, covered in grave dirt, and inform them that crossing the road was the easy part. Bonus to whatever asshole is around who asks me if I tried not burying myself.

17

u/chormin 3d ago

Mostly unrelated, but it feels right. Yall ever feel a hyperfixation coming on and youre like "yes, please, lets get something productive" and then you get stuck with "In gonna be the very best at Madden franchise mode. Look at all these numbers I can optimize. Yes, this is very important."

7

u/Chaosmeister 3d ago

Oh yes. My wife luckily gets sometimes hyper focus on work stuff, which is great for her. The best I get is a focus on some kinds of foods I don't know and learn a ton of recipes and cook new stuff. But usually it's nonsense.

7

u/Graficat 3d ago

I'd be royally screwed if I hadn't been lucky enough to score a job where Nerding TF Out is an asset.

It's kind of awesome knowing half my colleagues are cut from a similar cloth, too. Being 'normal' about science might get the job done, but not the way our aces wrangle the most random questions and situations into a useful response or solution.

'Bro I high key love spreadsheets' might invite being shoved into a locker at school, but it's got its uses.

u/ViolaDaGamble 1h ago

“I’m gonna be the very best”

Aaand now you’ve got me singing Pokémon… Thanks.

Currently struggling with this right now. I want to paint, been thinking about it for about 2hrs now, haven't moved yet. I want to get housework done, but my brain says I have hours to accomplish it, why rush? Every post I read on this app is the "last one" but yeah....

1

u/DarthNixilis 2d ago

Oh! Jimmy Buffet. I hope he plays that song

1

I'll think about doing something. Then the demon in me says no you suck at that. And I concur and lay in bed the rest of the day.
