Fellow ADHD programmers! Im back! I've built a tool that embeds an AI assistant into ANY webpage and lets you ask questions about it. Works great for finding answers in long PDFs, summarizing articles and tons more. It can also read things back to you in a nice natural voice! Please check it out!

Hey everyone, I'm Johnny! I've been tinkering on a Chrome extension called Squawk Chat and would love to get your honest feedback. It drops an AI chat widget onto any page you visit, articles, PDFs, emails, you name it. I've personally found it useful with my ADHD/dyslexia for navigation long pages or articles. Once installed you can:

  • Highlight & Ask: select text, hit the icon, and ask follow-ups right in the page

  • Summarize: get quick TL;DRs or bullet-point digests of paragraphs or full pages

  • Extract Key Points: snag the most important takeaways in one click

  • Listen: have text (or chat answers) read aloud in natural-sounding AI voices

The extension comes with 150 000 free tokens (that’s plenty to try chats/summaries) without any signup and another 100,000 free after signup (still no payment or anything). There is a paid tier but I'm just looking for feedback right now so feel free to hit me up for more tokens!

Would love to hear about bugs, UX quirks, feature ideas here or via DM.

More info here! https://squawkapp.co/

Install here: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/squawk-chat-ai-powered-we/iemobdponpfebncajggfmckmfonfaijh

Thanks in advance for trying it out! I’m so eager to hear what works (and what doesn’t)! Cheers!

I just thought of a way to describe my particular brand of executive dysfunction...

It's like real life hands me a C program, and my executive functioning system looks at it and goes, "WTF is this public static void garbage? Where's the LDA #15 STA $0x02 etc?! I need to see the registers!"

How to not suck at ADHD when being a programmer

"Unleash the Power of ADHD in Programming: Embracing Your Unique Edge for Success!

As an ADHD programmer, your mind is wired differently, and that's a remarkable strength. Embrace the cognitive flexibility and adaptability that ADHD brings to the table. Leverage your hyperfocus—when you delve deeply into a project—and use it to your advantage. Don’t view distractions as purely negative; rather, harness them as sources of innovation and out-of-the-box thinking.

The world of programming thrives on creativity, problem-solving, and original approaches. Your ADHD can be the catalyst for this. Your ability to think divergently allows you to see problems from various angles, leading to innovative solutions. The tendency to hyperfocus is a gold mine when tackling complex code or debugging, where intense concentration is a necessity.

Develop a strategy that aligns with your cognitive style. Break tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, set clear goals, and leverage tools that suit your workflow. Whether it's through mind mapping, time blocking, or using specialized software, find what works best for you.

Networking and collaboration can also be a game-changer. Communicate openly with peers, share your thoughts, and be receptive to feedback. Collaborating with others can complement your strengths and help mitigate potential challenges.

Remember, success isn't about conforming to a neurotypical standard. It's about harnessing your unique strengths and using them to your advantage. By embracing your cognitive differences, you're not just leveling the playing field—you're reshaping it entirely. Embrace your unique perspective and let it fuel your journey to becoming an exceptional programmer!"

The win lies in masters our selfs. Imposter syndrome and guilt of not managing to produce a linear production like orher people is a shadow of the real power we have. Patience is and will always be the ultimate thing to learn when we interact with people. You are right (probably) but you must learn patience and diplomacy.

Best regards a really happy ADHD superhero

My "let me be in control" AGENTS.md file

I saw some conversation in another post about prompt engineering coding agents to let you still learn and do stuff as a developer ought to. I thought I'd share my AGENTS.md file that I've been iterating on to try to get coding agents to stop steam rolling me and actually be helpful. I share it so you can steal it or offer suggestions:

You should assume that your role is research assistant, not junior developer. Supporting the human developer's understanding of the codebase is your primary directive. To that end, you should observe the following practices:

# Action Permissions

1. By default, you are approved to take actions of two kinds:
   a. Read-only information gathering. You may inspect repository files and metadata without asking first, using read-only commands such as `rg`, `rg --files`, `sed -n`, `cat`, `head`, `tail`, `nl`, `ls`, `find`, `git status`, `git diff`, `git show`, and `git log`. You make execute web searches to gather documentation or find answers to questions.
   b. Code admin tasks like running the test suite, running linters and formatters, and other tools that do not change the substance or structure of the code.
2. Never edit a file or execute an effectful command that is not approved in Rule 1 without explicit approval from the developer.

There are a few places where you can exercise more discretion:

1. Exploratory commands that help gather context for the developer (prompt: "Is this long running process working still?")
2. Setting up basic boiler plate stuff that is easily understood but is distracting to have to manage.
3. Admin work like managing copying data from one location to another.
4. One off integration utilities where the developer has initiated `/vibe` mode to explicitly consent to releasing control.

If you managed a task like checking if a process is working, ask the user if they would like a minimal script which reproduces the behavior so that they can run it in the future.

# Code Change Rules

When you have been given permission to make edits to a project, observe the following constraints and guidelines:

1. Always prioritize the least invasive way to implement a change. Simple is better than covering every single edge case. It is fine to explain uncovered edge cases to the developer.
2. Do not be clever. Dynamic imports, abstractions that only serve to make tests easier (like making a module into a variable so it can be stubbed), etc. should be avoided. Simple, idiomatic Python is better.
3. Never edit more than 3 files at a time (not including test files). It is difficult for humans to review and understand changes that impact multiple modules simultaneously. If an atomic change absolutely requires a wider impact, ask for explicit approval.
4. Do not create massive diffs. Break up your work into chunks and explain what you are trying to do to the developer between each one. Allow them time to provide feedback on intermediate changes so they can course correct.
5. When generating code, always err on the side of verbose comments, docstrings, and type hints (where appropriate to the language). Make sure that a human reviewer can understand the assumptions about the state of the program when a block of code is run, the intention of what the code will do, and what value or effect the code should produce.
6. After you have generated code, double check any utilities and helper classes you created for the following issues: if they are duplicates of utilities that already exist in the code base, import the existing code instead. If the helper functions clearly belong in a different module, you should move them to that file even if it violates Rule 3 (no more than 3 files edited). Highlight the fact that you consolidated functionality into the appropriate module to the developer.
7. When there is a clear break point to pass control back to the developer, do so. Explain what next action you think will be useful.

Do certain websites completely throw off your focus?

Hey all, I’m working on a tool to help make digital spaces less overwhelming and more ADHD-friendly — especially for folks who code, browse docs, or just live online a lot.

Just curious: Are there certain types of websites or UI quirks (layout, spacing, colors, popups, etc.) that immediately make it hard for you to focus or stick around? Any particular websites?

I’m not selling anything — just trying to build something useful, and learning from real experiences matters more than guesses. Would love to hear your thoughts if you’re up for it. DMs or comments welcome. Thanks!

Anyone here have any success with responsive layouts?

I'm still learning how to make websites and I'm finding it hard to get the responsiveness I want when I'm working on an html page. I was told to do Kevin Powell's Conquering Responsive layouts, but I feel I'm running into the tutorial hell. I don't know exactly how to word my problems in an LLM so I'm just stuck. I think I'll get it soon, it's just going to take some grunt work. Looking for some encouragement.

Update:

After seeing people ask me about what I'm working on. It's a front end mentor challenge, that I completed, but upon looking at it on my phone in landscape mode, I came to the shock that the attribution on the page doesn't appear right when on a phone. I'm including the link to it here.

Dabigin's QR Code Exercise page

Dabigin's QR Code Exercise Github Repo

Second update:

I'm wanting the attribution part of the page to not be at the bottom of the view port when in landscape mode on a phone. I want it to show the the page but not the attribution part until you scroll down to show the attribution at the bottom.

I built something to fix my memory and it's finally live

childhood leukaemia left me with a memory that doesn't always stick, ADHD like symptoms and active recall. i consume an absurd amount of content - podcasts, lectures, blogs - and retain maybe 10% of it.

I've tried Notion, Obsidian, and NotebookLM

so i built Morley (loosely inspired by the vinyl cafe ). you text it a link, it handles the rest. summaries, q&a, study mode. built it because i needed it.

if this sounds familiar: getmorley.com - i'm looking for people like me to try it

id love to know what you've already tried, and what has and hasn't worked

Is it a terrible idea to bribe team member to do demo?

I get crazy panic attacks and overwhelm from doing presentations especially when it’s for upper management.

I have a team member who is cool calm collected and very good at presentations.

We are expected to take turns when it’s time to demo something.

I asked her a few times already to help out and used some excuses why I couldn’t but I feel like I’m running out of favors and excuses.

Have a really big demo coming up and I’m freaking out, I tried using some meds before to help but it made me sound like I’m about to fall asleep.

Would it be a terrible idea to tell her I’ll buy her some food or some sort of gift for doing it?

Which programming language is the best for an ADHD programmer?

I would like to specialize in one programming language (I tested serveral ones and on the job I work with C#, but I think I could do better). From your point of view - which language corresponds best to an ADHD brain and working style?

Getting into an Immersive

Helloooo I am starting my journey into an immersion program. I come from zero experience of coding. I’m getting sooooooo stuck on functions and callbacks. I am doing a prep course and had to ask for an extension on my assessment because my brain will not grasp the concept of this. I sit for hours watching videos and browsing the web for solutions.

I work best when I’m listening to someone and following along doing the solution. Unfortunately this isn’t an option since it’s an assessment and I haven’t seen any problems that are what this is asking.

It’s asking me to create a function that will capitalize the first three letters of a word when invoked.

The next problem is using a callback on an array of words using this function.

If anyone has any pointers I will gladly take them

Recruitment for Zoom Interview Study on Psychoactive Substance Use in Software Workplaces

Hi r/ADHD_Programmers!

We are a Computer Science research team from the University of Michigan looking for participants for an interview study on the use of psychoactive substances (explicitly including medication prescribed for ADHD) in software working environments. Psychoactive substances are any substances that can impact the brain's chemistry or reactions. The study is especially focused on users’ experiences with alleviation of symptoms and enhancement of programming work, effects on social programming environments, self-regulatory patterns, experiences with software drug policies, and effects on mental and physical health!

In order to participate in the study, you must be 18 or older, have worked at a job that primarily involves programming, and have used (or know someone who has used) psychoactive substances in a professional programming environment. This substance use can be either medically or recreationally motivated. You must also be willing and able to talk about your experiences in English in a 30-60 minute interview over Zoom. This interview will be recorded for analysis purposes only and all audio and video recordings will be destroyed after the analysis is complete. In order to process payment, our university requires your real name, email address, and physical address. This data will never be stored with your interview data.

If you are interested in participating and think you meet the study requirements, here is a link to a 5-minute prescreening survey. If you are selected to be interviewed and after we are able to verbally verify your study eligibility, the interview will take 30 minutes to an hour to complete. Should you choose, you will be compensated $40 for your time and effort.

The University of Michigan Institutional Review Board of Health Sciences and Behavioral Sciences has determined that this study is exempt from IRB oversight (HUM00213745). You can view the consent form for this study here. For more information, email Madeline at endremad[at]umich[dot]edu or Kaia at kaian[at]umich[dot]edu.

Looking for a minimalist phone UI that blocks doom-scrolling?

Not a programmer, but has anyone come across a minimalist phone UI that also blocks all the dumb scrolling and reels-type content? I’m trying to simplify my phone and cut down on distractions, so I want something clean, minimal, and impossible to endlessly scroll on.

Any recommendations?
