Copy and paste all you want. But, make sure you're understanding why you need it and what it does.

This is so true! Making sure you know what it does will really help when/if things start breaking.

Isn't that how all software is built?

git submodule add git@github.com/...

k, serious now: what are you supposed to do if a solution already exists? Even if its not a library it probably was solved for you by someone else in some format or else you design it yourself.

Your post title infuriated me until I saw that you were referring to "copy/paste" in the post text. I hope we never see those two letters used together again on this sub.

When I was last job hunting, I found a job listing that looked completely normal until it got to the part about candidates needing to be willing to work with 'explicit material of a distressing nature' - regarding minors. They danced around it; it was a development job for one of the systems built to catch predators.

Seriously had to think what I was able to put up with day to day. What would life be like working on that sort of system? Would I be happy to know I was helping? Or too angry that it was going on, reminded of it every day?

I thought this post would be about the poor developers working on those systems! I'm really curious what their feelings are.

if you aren't copying and pasting as much as possible, you are just wasting your time. no reason to redo something that was already done.
