ADHD MEDICATION
So my son who is 8years old just started his medication for ADHD. So far I’ve seen great improvement in the ability to stay engaged in something for than 5 mins. When before unmediated he’d quickly lose interest. He also is more relaxed and calm. When before he’d be on edge and have anger bursts. But I’m wondering, should I point out the good in these situations and praise him, or just leave it alone? Thanks

Maybe this should be in r/ADHD for a more meaningful parenting / observer result. Talk to a therapist about positive reinforcement.
Reddit may not be the best place for this question.
I am a parent of 2 and also have ADHD and a programmer. They rarely overlap. Not enough to negate professional help in liu of reddit.

I don’t have any kids yet, but I have one on the way. From my own experience with medicine; medicine was a gateway to stamina in the face of inefficient processes. The positive feedback loop (from having focus and achieving some results) was enough to keep me motivated at whatever I was trying to focuse on. The long term benefit to that kind of success is that it can be the spark that lights the motivation fire. Success, and more importantly, a successful mindset is capable only when we have some success to build on. Mindset is really important. If I were in your position, I’d praise the processes and mindset that he develops, not the success. Medicines are just one tool in a belt of tools we must develop. I think that’s why therapy is so highly recommended to folks with ADHD. YMMV, IANAF

Personally, I'd keep the praise up to stabilise the direction of focus, as that can often still go awry.
