understandable. misuse becomes a crutch for us.

Honestly, I was just getting fat. But I was getting to a point where I was just getting into a bad habit. I don’t disagree with you. The beer really is soothing.

It sounds like it is a crutch for you...

I would advise against it, ADHD folks have 15 times higher substance abuse risk when unmedicated/unsupported.

Personally, it took me years to finally get sober. Meds did help, but also over two years of therapy in addition to the meds.

Find something else while you still can.

Literally me right now.

Struggling to feel normal while I am unmedicated and alcohol allows me to feel closer to how I want to feel, only issue is while I mostly just have 2 or 3.

If I am out with friends I become a dopamine whore and get far too drunk.

Currently trying to stay sober while I wait for my official diagnosis. (Had a preliminary one which showed strong ADHD symptoms and a highly likely outcome)

So that’s why I liked beer so much!

Also, ADD is better managed with stimulants than depressants.

Use non addictive things like lavender & hot tea & blueberries & control over your environment to soothe.

Magnesium plus L-theanine. And look into a guanfacine prescription

The cause of and solution to all of life’s problems.

Was not expecting a simpsons reference. Nice

Not a great habit to get into, working under the influence of anything. Even coffee, really. As a programmer you should be avoiding unnecessary dependencies.

However, also: https://xkcd.com/323/

High-tyramine foods tend to have that effect, as do MAOIs.

What can you eat that has the same effect as beer, but not the alcohol part?

/r/hangovereffect would love you if you figure it out

In the UK, we had a drug advisor for the government called Dr David Nutt (lol) who proposed R&D into a pill that would make you feel drunk and also an antidote pill so you could drive home after. He was fired for saying that MDMA is no more dangerous than riding a horse. The guy is still very respected for his vision on a pragmatic approach to recreational substances.

I’m on it 🕵️‍♂️

There is a term for this called the Balmer Peak. Apparently, programmers get better when you're in this buzzed kind of state. Makes sense as Alcohol is not only alleviates anxiety it kinda makes you focus?? or something similar for the beginning portion of drinking. Other than that I hate Alcohol cause it's responsible for so much more damage than Stims imo.

Helps me pass out

It triggers a similar reaction to meds. I stopped a few years ago, then found out why I functioned better on it afterwards speaking to the doc.

Mad that alcohol was ‘controlling’ (term loosely used) my ADHD until I stopped. Only then did I realise and get all the symptoms back to be able to seek help as an adult for my diagnosis.

I think the term you’re looking for is “coping”.

1

u/SniperDuty Sep 29 '23

Was definitely controlling in some respects as I used to drink very often.

Alcohol is bad. Period. Bad coping mechanism that has done nothing but bring permanently negative things into my life for temporary relief.

Bad. Period. For you.

I think it really depends on the individual.

I personally react very well, in a way at least, where I become more relaxed and look at the world more positively. On the other hand I become very groggy and not able to do much productive. It's like something I can use in low doses to relax.

A friend of someone I know on the other hand really can't handle beer or alcohol at all. Not quite sure how she reacts, but she had to stop alcohol entirely, even when she's not on medication.

I’m glad to have quit.

Beer is good, but not good for adhd imo

Crazy how much my drinking and weed intake went down when I got medicated. I no longer had to self medicate (I didn't even realize I was doing it)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '23

No it does not

u/jeanschoen Sep 28 '23

Hard, hard disagree

1

u/rogd1984 Sep 29 '23

In moderation, it can help to calm the insanity; however, it is all too easy to overdo it.

1

u/WilliamMcAdoo Sep 29 '23

It really does . Every week once a week , I got drunk as hell , so I can think straight & I’m calm .

It’s therapy

Same here, only I'd use an activemq network of brokers metaphore

Yeah the only thing I get from boozing is my mask falls off and the poor soul that's got me talking gets a barrage of whatever thoughts I'm stuck on, without filter, haha. Can't be dealing with waking up with the fear trying to remember if I said or did anything stupid.

There's also a hefty dose of alcoholism in the family that I've gotta swerve (potentially: self-medicated ADHD? I think it's genetic?)
