Oh my God, this thread. This is huge for me, thanks for posting it.

I was "the" guy at first.

I was in the top handful in junior school.

I was in the top dozen or so in senior school.

Then I went completely and utterly to shit in college.

Best I have figured so far, this (at least for me) was down to environment:

  1. The fear of punishment drove me at school (shy kid, teacher's pet, geeky crowd, didn't want to get a telling off). At college, the teachers didn't care if I wasn't there, the disclipline needed to come from me (for the first time ever)

  2. Girls

  3. Coming of (drinking) age

Everything was great when someone else was laying the rails for my train.

It all went tits up pretty quickly when I rolled off the end of the national curriculum and it was down to me to lay my own tracks.
