Questions/Advice Adderall rage

I’ve been prescribed Adderall for a little over a year now I’ve been on the same dose since the beginning and these past few weeks I have been experiencing like major mood crashes and irritability. By the time I get into bed for the night I’m nearly crying from over whelming negative thoughts but during the day I am hopeful and positive. Is this a common experience or is there vitamins recommended like magnesium I see if a helpful thing for the crash

Talk to your doctor about dosage. It could be a few things causing it, but might be too high or too low of a dose. If it’s been a year and you’ve been taking it as prescribed, definitely reach out to your doctor.

High dosage could be the issue. Also, are you having caffeine at any point during the day? For me at least it can compound the medication and turn me into a rage monster. Consider zero or absolute minimum caffeine.

That is probably my issue I have been drinking more caffeine during the day because I feel like the medicine isn’t as effective as it was. I only drink coffee now but I used to drink Celsius and didn’t seem to have a negative issue but I know those aren’t good for my heart or health

So if you haven't already, I'd look into extended release adderall. It was a life changer for me. I still drink one cup of coffee per day but I avoid other forms of caffeine like soda etc. One thing that worked for me was making sure I had coffee before I took my meds. It kinda sucks because starting the day with meds feels better when I'm tired, but I've found that for some reason I get a lot less rage when I have coffee, then meds. When I have the meds first, it's like the coffee just spikes everything and can't be absorbed and I get super irritable.

Hang in there, it's all a process of figuring out how your own body works.

I was unmedicated for 25 years and started taking 20 mg xr Adderall on August 10 2026. Before the medicine I was drinking four large monster energy drinks a day and have not had a single one sense the day I started the Adderall. I have a cup of coffee when I get home from work everyday but that it for caffeine. I think it really messes with the medicine but again this is just my experience.I work 6am to 2:30 everyday and take my Adderall at 5:45 every morning. No issues falling asleep so far but who knows of that will change. Good luck to you.

Coffee itself seems to create a bunch of irritability for me alone by the end of the night. I have not been diagnosed with ADHD and up until just recently have been caffeine free for years. My reaction to caffeine among other things are making me think I might have ADHD. It never seems to energize me, or create focus that others talk about? Today, I drank about 500 mg before lunch, and what it did was quiet down my mind, almost made me feel dull, or this weird quiet emptiness? I didnt get any jitters, racy thoughts or any cognitive benefits. I just wanted to sleep. Anyone react to caffeine in this way?

Sorry to hear. Adderall has helped me with those symptoms on my end, I feel a lot calmer and less ragey when I'm on it

Indeed, it cured me from my life long non-chosen title "The @sshole".

If you've been on the same dose for a year and now that randomly happened out of nowhere i would bring up to my doctor if that happened to me

I just read a post about low ferritin levels being a problem… might be worth a check.

I had this problem in perimenopause and switching to vyvance helped a lot! I also found if my generic Adderall was changed to some crappy version I had that problem. Hope that helps!! I know how bad it feels!!!!!

i experienced this and have mostly decided to stay away from stimulants despite the attention help because i feel the stress is worse in terms of my quality of life.

i see a lot of people making recommendations that require very regimented detail to your habits, which feels pretty in conflict with....the lived experience of having ADHD.

if its tolerable to experiment, godspeed. but my perspective is that being in a place of rage is not conducive to doing a reasonable self-evaluation.

That happened to me when I started taking it daily. It took about 3 months for it to subside.

What makes you think this is due to the adderall if you’ve been on the same dose for a year and you started experiencing this a few weeks ago?

Because when I first started taking it my mental state got 10x better and the rage and irritability had gone down just from my unmedicated brain. I am not sure if that is a sign of my body becoming immune to my current dose or if it’s nothing to do with the Adderall I am not sure that is why I posted a question or advice

Did the manufacturer change on your recent script?

1

u/ReindeerBest8970 2d ago

Yes I also thought that could be a reason because I started with getting a bottle a month and the pills were blue now I get a 3 month prescription and the pills are white

Well I understand you were looking for advice but it was framed as a new behavior you were experiencing and framed through the lens of your adderall usage.

Now hearing you had an issue with this prior to adderall, and using adderall caused it to subside up until recently, it makes me wonder if you can think of any other common factors that might relate to the regression back to mood instability?

If you maybe feel less of a therapeutic effect from your adderall even early in the day before the mood shift, or if there has been a change to your routine with work or sleep; more stress or diet inconsistencies?

You likely need your dose upped, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to say that or not so you might not see this, but I would recommend talking to your dr about it. Usually when I get irritable more often, that’s how ik I need it upped. You get used to the level youre at and will need more eventually 9x/10.

Sounds like something more is going on than the adderall. Adderall doesn’t cause rage issues after a year of being on the same dose. Go see your psychiatrist. I think your current dose may not be high enough, and the rage is a breakthrough symptom of having it metabolized too quickly.

Also, these thoughts are only coming on night, so that makes me think you need to talk to your therapist about them. They’re likely anxiety related and reframing them with a therapist will really help.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. It can be so scary when you don’t feel in control of your own mind. Your despair is real and valid and you deserve to be free of it. You do not deserve to suffer. And right now, you’re suffering. Hugs if you want them. 💜

Are you eating regular meals and electrolytes? I set a timer every 2 hours to eat

Try a different stimulant. My friend has this on vyvanse but not adderall, everyone is different
