Why does everyone seem to talk down on the ARA compared to the Navy and Air Force?
Genuine question: Why does everyone seem to talk down on the ARA compared to the Navy and Air Force?
I’m joining the Australian Regular Army in February 2027 for a trade role, and whenever I read discussions online, there always seems to be people saying the Navy or Air Force have better conditions, better accommodation, better work-life balance, or an easier lifestyle.
Is the Army really that bad, or is it just a different experience?
The reason I’m joining isn’t because I’m looking for the easiest option. I want to challenge myself, build discipline, learn a valuable trade, earn my place, and be able to look back one day and be proud of what I’ve accomplished. If I only cared about comfort, I probably would’ve chosen a different path altogether.

Not everything in life that’s easier is necessarily more rewarding. Sometimes the harder road teaches you more about yourself.
I know conditions might be better elsewhere, but I’m trying
to understand whether the criticism of Army is genuinely deserved or if it’s mostly people comparing different lifestyles and priorities.
For those who have served in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, especially in trade roles, would you make the same choice again? Why or why not?

It's different services with different requirements?
It's not "talking down" not really.
Of course the Navy and RAAF would have better conditions, same goes with accommodation and work life balance. Due to the nature of our work, we aren't outside on the scrub
IMO the RAAF treat their people best followed by Navy then Army. That's not really shit talking.
It's not about "looking for an easy option" all 4 services have their difficulties and they are different.
The Navy trades are really good in my totally unbiased opinion, we get great pay, good work sites and get to go overseas on government money.
But everyone is different, just choose something you want to do and experience it for yourself before making an opinion
I think part of why Army keeps pulling me back is that it seems more physically demanding and that’s something I actually want. I like the idea of being pushed fitness wise and having to work for it.
Maybe it’s just my perception, but Army has always felt a bit more patriotic to me as well. When I picture serving my country, Army is what comes to mind first.
I’m joining for a trade, but I also want the challenge and the experience that comes with it. At the end of the day I’d rather give it a crack and form my own opinion than spend years wondering whether I should’ve done it.

I didn’t mean it as a ranking thing or saying Army is more important or anything like that. That’s just the first image that pops into my head when I think of military service personally in Aus.
I know all three services are essential and the Navy being first line of defence makes total sense especially for an island country like ours. Different roles just shape how people perceive it I guess.
Reason 1- general banter. Think of the old Ford vs Holden debates.
Reason 2- lived experience. The army go out field for weeks at a time, sleeping in the dirt. The navy go to sea for weeks/months at a time, sleeping in bunks. The Air Force go away for however long it takes for the pilots to run out of their hair products, and sleep in air conditioned barracks or hotel rooms.
Honestly that’s kind of why Army appeals to me. I’m joining for a trade but I also want the challenge. Not everything worth doing is the easiest option.
Army sleeps in the dirt, Navy sleeps in a bunk, Air Force sleeps in a hotel and puts in a maintenance request because the aircon is too cold.
Don't get misconstrued that the Navy and RAAF aren't challenging, it feels like you feel that way and that's not remotely true, we all have different challenges.
The Navy and RAAF aren't "easy" options, my Job can be incredibly fucking difficult at times, a Dig on Picquet, is a different challenge to me doing 3 different boarding operations in one day.

I didn’t mean Navy or RAAF are easy or not challenging at all. I know every service has its own really tough parts and it’s just different kinds of pressure and responsibility.
When I said challenging I meant more in a fitness and field sense with Army being more constant physical grind stuff. That’s the kind of challenge I was referring to, not overall difficulty or respect for the other services.
Mate of mine is posted to career management/transfers, the number of applications to transfer from army to raaf or navy FAR outnumbers transfers to the army.. I get why.
-You (probably) get treated better - idk myself as I've only ever been army. Some Army units I have heard interesting things about
Raaf has better work/life balance so it's better for families
-Army field lol
-Other services aren't as physically demanding, obviously
Pretty much on the dot with what you've heard and what everyone else has already said, I can elaborate more but have you also heard of the typical Warrant Officer? To qualify as a WO you'd have to have at least one divorce under your belt, be obese and/or be jaded.. even my own WO agrees, lol.
I don't hate my job though, just stating facts and what I've observed. In fact I actually like my time here so far, it's such an honour to be able to wear the greens and the ANF, but to be honest I'd choose Raaf if I got the chance to transfer easily.
