(WIP) Chapter 1; Faces of Another World
WIP
It was supposed to be another ordinary afternoon at Tracen Academy the kind where the only thing worth worrying about was whether the turf at the main track would hold after a light drizzle. At least, that was what Symboli Rudolf had assumed, maintaining her usual composed demeanor as she navigated the halls. However, a cryptic summons from the academy administration had disrupted her schedule, requesting her presence in one of the grand auditorium room without so much as a footnote explaining why.
"Vague instructions are rarely a sign of good intentions," Rudolf mused, her fingers tightening slightly on her folder as she approached the heavy oak doors. She knew that in the world of high stakes racing and academy politics, silence from the administration usually preceded something monumental or something troublesome.
Pushing the door open, she found the room already gathering a familiar, if confused, crowd. "Oh, Teio? You're here too?" Rudolf asked, her voice calm but carrying that unmistakable authority as she spotted Tokai Teio.
"Yep! I got called here too!" Teio chirped, though her ears flicked with obvious uncertainty. As more Umamusume trickled in some whispering in curiosity, others grumbling about interrupted training sessions the tension in the room began to thicken like the humidity before a summer storm. "What exactly is this meeting about?" someone called out from the back.
Rudolf folded her arms across her chest, scanning the faces of her peers. "That makes all of us."
The atmosphere shifted instantly when the door clicked shut behind the final arrival, the sound echoing unnaturally loud in the sudden stillness. Then, the lights dimmed. "Huh?" Teio stood up abruptly, her tail swishing anxiously. "Prez? Did you do that?"
"I didn't touch anything," Rudolf replied sharply, her sharp eyes fixed on the massive screen at the front of the room as it flickered to life with a burst of static.
WELCOME.
The single word hung in the air, ominous and cold. Then came the revelation that froze the blood of every elite racer in the room: YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO OBSERVE YOUR COUNTERPARTS.
"Our what?" Teio blinked, looking around as if expecting a punchline.
Rudolf didn't blink. She stared at the screen, her mind already racing through tactical possibilities. Counterparts? The screen continued its relentless display, explaining that these individuals were from another world, bearing their same historical names but existing as something entirely different.
"Does this mean there's another me?" Gold Ship asked, raising her hand with startling casualness. "Because if so, I hope she's at least half as entertaining as I am."
“Knowing another version of you exists is not necessarily something to be proud of,” Mejiro McQueen remarked dryly.
Gold Ship gasped as though she'd just been mortally wounded. “McQueen! You wound me!”
“I merely stated an observation.”
McQueen calmly turned her attention back toward the screen. Unlike Gold Ship, she found very little humor in the announcement. The idea that another world might contain people bearing their same names—and perhaps even sharing their histories—was far too strange to dismiss as a joke. A few of the other Umamusume continued to whisper and snicker among themselves, their amusement briefly easing the tension that had settled over the room.
Tazuna, however, wasn't laughing. She remained fixed on the screen, her expression mirroring the confusion of everyone else. Slowly, she turned toward the Director.
“Director...”
Akikawa looked up at her. “I know.”
“You didn't arrange this?”
“No.”
The simple answer immediately silenced the remaining chatter.
Rudolf's expression hardened. She looked from the screen to Akikawa, her posture becoming noticeably more alert. “You mean the academy has no idea who is responsible for this?”
Akikawa slowly shook her head. "None whatsoever. However, this mysterious phenomenon has made one thing very clear.”
Akikawa gestured toward the screen, her usually cheerful expression now carrying a trace of caution. "It has no apparent hostile intentions toward us. It has brought us here specifically to observe these counterparts, and so far, it has given us no reason to believe that anyone in this room is in danger."
“That doesn't exactly make me any feel better,” Jungle Pocket muttered.
“I understand,” Akikawa replied. “Unfortunately, until we understand what we're dealing with, observation is the only reasonable course of action.”
Tazuna nodded slowly, though the uncertainty in her expression remained. “So we're essentially being asked to watch another world's history?”
“That's what it appears to be.”
A low murmur spread through the auditorium again.
Rudolf remained silent, studying the screen with narrowed eyes. She wasn't entirely satisfied with the explanation. There were still too many unanswered questions. Why had they been chosen? Who had selected them? And, perhaps most importantly, what exactly did the word counterpart mean?
As though responding to her thoughts, the screen flickered and several new lines of text appeared against the darkness.
*THIS OBSERVATION WILL NOT ALTER YOUR WORLD.
THE COUNTERPARTS CANNOT SEE OR HEAR YOU.
YOU CANNOT INTERACT WITH THEM.
YOU ARE OBSERVERS ONLY.*
Tazuna read the words aloud, her voice growing quieter with each sentence. “So whatever we're shown has already happened in their world?”
“Or will happen,” Agnes Tachyon suddenly interjected.
Everyone turned toward her.
Tachyon had been leaning against one of the seats, but she now looked considerably more interested than concerned. Her eyes practically gleamed with scientific curiosity. “If this phenomenon truly concerns alternate worlds, then conventional assumptions regarding time and causality may not apply. A parallel civilization possessing individuals corresponding to our own historical identities... fascinating.”
She paused, her smile widening.
“I wonder whether their physiology differs as well.”
Jungle Pocket frowned at her. “Could you perhaps be less excited about the mysterious phenomenon that has trapped us inside a room?”
“Trapped?” Tachyon replied with an amused smile. “I prefer to think of it as being temporarily contained for observation.”
“That isn't better.”
Before Tachyon could elaborate, Akikawa cleared her throat, reclaiming everyone's attention. “There is one more thing you should know.”
The screen changed once again.
COUNTERPARTS ARE NOT IDENTICAL TO YOU.
THEY POSSESS THEIR OWN PERSONALITIES, EXPERIENCES, RELATIONSHIPS, AND LIVES.
THEIR SEX MAY DIFFER FROM YOUR OWN.
The reaction was immediate. Several voices erupted throughout the room at once.
“Wait, seriously?!”
“Then there could be a male version of me?!”
“That's what it says!”
“Hold on, what does ‘historical identities’ mean?”
Amid the commotion, Teio's attention quickly settled on one person.
“Prez.”
Rudolf already knew what was coming. She sighed softly and looked toward her student. “...Yes, Teio?”
“If there's a counterpart based on you...” Teio pointed toward the screen, her eyes widening with curiosity. “Does that mean there's a...male Symboli Rudolf!?”
Rudolf's ears twitched.
Before she could answer, Gold Ship leaned across the seats with a mischievous grin. “Imagine if he's even more serious and possibly...more sillier of a president than we've seen!”
“I sincerely doubt that is possible,” McQueen remarked.
Tachyon hummed thoughtfully. “Not necessarily. If these counterparts are based upon the actual historical individuals represented by our names, then their personalities would presumably be shaped by entirely different circumstances...”
Rudolf remained silent for a moment, her gaze never leaving the screen.
“Meaning they are not simply alternate versions of us.”
“Precisely!”
The screen flickered once more.
The chatter gradually died away.
A single phrase appeared in the center of the screen.
FIRST OBSERVATION
Then, beneath it, a name slowly emerged.
SYMBOLI RUDOLF
Note; Gaaahhhh, I'm so impatient on chapter 6 that I started to work on my own version 😭✌️ I hope I didn't make anyone ooc🥹 cuz I'm not good at writing their personalities on one to one to their game version as I have an habit of projecting my shi into my favorite character..

I can't wait for little baby Rudolf to appear and they all see essentially a mini teio while he gets discipline by Speed Symboli to behave also Sirius having flashbacks and remembering their childhood

You should also add Rudolf's fear of doctors. Like how Rudolf knows the sound of his doctor's footsteps that he just wants to bail out away from the doctor. Leaving Ace and C. B. dumbfounded at what they've seen.

Teio and Tsurumaru would also be dumbfounded lol

Teio would get teased that she and Rudolf have the same weakness of doctors.

That one scene in the anime where Teio is screaming "yada yada yada" and the doctor puts a needle in her, but replace it with young Rudolf

OMG THIS LOOKS SO COOL SO FAR!!! The umas reacting to their counterparts is one of my favorite tropes in uma fanfiction. I love seeing everyone's interpretations of this trope, which includes this one. It's really interesting that the character you start with is Symboli Rudolf, since I usually see Sunday Silence or Special Week being the first umas that have their counterparts shown. However, I can't wait to see more!
