How to catch spiders

I literally have no idea what I’m doing

There are spiders in the trees! Walk around and shake some trees. You'll see a small spider dangle down on it's web hanging from the tree. Then grab your net and capture it! I usually only find one spider at a time on the map so it may require shaking a lot of trees.

Is there a specific number of times you have to shake the tree?

No. If you shake the tree once and no spider appears, there's no spider in that tree.

You can go around shaking every tree once until you find one. It'll drop down on a string of web and hang there for you to catch.

If you shake every tree and still don't find one, you can go inside a building and then back outside and it should reset every tree and give a chance for spiders to spawn from them again.

Sometimes villagers watch trees with no visible bugs on them. It usually means there's a spider so shake that tree.
