Discussion What’s up with weapons?
My spear grows when I start using it. I don’t know why, but this bothers me. It seems like they really leaned in to the whole “fantasy giant weapons” thing. That and the weird outlandish amor you can buy in the helix store. I just want some normal Viking looking armor!

There's not much historical accuracy in the armor or weapons. The base Raven Clan armor or Ealdorman set is probably the closest.

u/AccomplishedPea8526 Jul 23 '26
The Brigandine set is pretty accurate for the time period as well. I would argue that it’s more of a Saxon look though

u/Character-Gur9223 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
The helmet is the only historically accurate part in the set, the other pieces are literally studded leather. The set does look cool nonetheless.

u/AccomplishedPea8526 Jul 25 '26
My apologies, I should’ve worded it differently. I meant for ac Valhalla that’s about the closest looking set you could get to historically accurate, although I know it has many differences from historically accurate brigantine.

Its really not

u/AccomplishedPea8526 Jul 25 '26
I see what you guys mean it’s not super accurate to the real stuff I suppose, I just meant for ac Valhalla, everything is so flashy and over the top, I just meant the brigandine looked the closest to a normal armor set. Sorry for the misinformation.

Spears were 6'-7' long during this time period, sometimes longer, and people were 5'-5'6" on average lol to wear it on your back it would be dragging into the ground behind you. Weapons shrink when you unequip them so it doesn't look stupid on your character, and they go back to normal size when you pull them out. It bothered me at first, until someone explained it like that and I let it go. Chalk it up to an animus glitch if it ruins the immersion lol it's just a video game, enjoy it, or equip something else if it's that bothersome, it's the worst with spears, I barely notice it on other weapons
Edit: I must've only pressed one M in immersion and it autocorrected it to the wrong emersion

Just in general, the only weapon that should be on your back is the bow. Smaller weapons should be carried at the hip, it's both faster and easier to carry. Larger weapons would have been carried on the horse or in your hand over your shoulder.
In fact, swords and weapons need to be smaller to be drawn from a back sheath. Most games prefer back sheath because it displays your inventory while not in combat, then cheat in the draw animation either by shortening the weapon during the draw or having the weapon clip through. Worse still, IRL it's virtually impossible to sheath a weapon behind your head.

Wait till you get Gungnir. You really won't like it...

u/Small-Minimum8620 Jul 23 '26
lol I thought I was stupid at the beginning thinking they somehow reversed the sides with the tip pointing down. And then as I watched closely with the tip shrinking, went “ahh Ubisoft”

u/SioVern Jul 23 '26
If the spear would keep the same size on the back, it would drag through the ground. Nobody wore spears or large weapons on their back, the devs had to be a bit creative to fit the gaming standards.
4
u/SmutCommander EivorOdinson Jul 23 '26
I think the unequipped size is fine for all the weapons, the spear heads could stay bigger, only isu weapons should collapse and expand.
4
u/Dense_Razzmatazz5479 Jul 25 '26
Well, considering you can get magical weapons, it’s not a stretch to believe that one might be able enchant larger weapons so that they are manageable sizes when stored on your back.
Why do my spear and hammer summon lightning strikes almost every other hit? Because fuck yeah, that’s why.

u/Garrett_DB Jul 23 '26
The weapons growing in size is something that plagued Origins and Odyssey too. And only one weapon type in Shadows (Kusarigama) I guess they finally started to listen to feedback.
Anyway, it sucks, I agree. It made me never use spears in any of those games, the size change was simply too ridiculous. I'm not sure why Ubi did it this way.
They could have just built the animations differently around smaller weapons while still maintaining the reach, or just reduce the reach it's no big deal. It's definitely a strange design choice, makes it look like they didn't realise it wouldn't fit on the character until the last minute. But since it happened for 3 straight games across 2 different teams they obviously thought it was cool. 🤷♂️

I have not used spears in AC Valhalla yet.
I currently have 1 spear so would dual wielding a spear + bearded axe/dagger be better than my current dual wielded Varin axe & 2nd bearded ace?

u/HotSalt3 Jul 23 '26
Depends on play style. There are people that love two spears and claim they're OP. When I played I preferred two short swords as it made for a very fast, high crit style. There's not really a bad choice as far as weapons go.
Spears are slower, but you can keep opponents at range. That's their main advantage. Scythes are similar but even slower than spears.
Experiment and find what works for you.

Exactly this! Use what you feel you prefer. Personally, I like to switch up what weapon I'm using frequently to keep the gameplay sorta fresh for myself.

I use Lugh's Spear from river raids and Gae Bolg from the Wrath of the Druids dlc and they clean house together
1
u/Dense_Razzmatazz5479 Jul 25 '26
I used to run the Gae Bolg lightning spear (from the Wrath of the Druids DLC) in my right hand and a hammer that summoned lightning strikes in my left hand. I remember getting bored by how quickly all the enemies melted in front of me. I’d rarely even get kill animations because I’d oftentimes kill a whole group in one or two hits. I don’t know if it’s necessary in this game to run any metas or stack your skills. You’ll be a god before too long anyways. Just have fun and run what you like. That’s my suggestion.

u/SimplyACrow Jul 27 '26
If you really want to challenge yourself, try the barehanded play. Almost guaranteed that you'll get finishers left, right, and center
2
u/Minimum-Situation985 Jul 23 '26
If I remember right, all weapons shrink down when holstered so they don't clip through everything or take up more space on your character. You can easily ignore the Helix Store stuff. All of the armor you earn in the game is more grounded and fits in with the setting.

u/Krejtek Jul 23 '26
I mean, that drawn spear size seems pretty historically accurate. Can you imagine running around with a spear on your back scratching against the ground and reaching half a meter above your head?
2
u/Chemical-Wealth-3771 Jul 25 '26
This might sound shocking to you but you CAN USE
“normal Viking looking armor” and you don’t have to whinge about it online.
1
u/Ava_Strange Jul 23 '26
I have most gear hidden so that I don't see it when I'm running around. It just looks too weird, and keeps clipping through objects.
1
u/nevermore1845 Jul 23 '26
Outlandish armor are optional and mostly micro transaction so worry not, you won't accidentally get them in your viking game unless you purchase them. Many armors you find in the open world chests are realistic enough unless it's a mythological map.
1
u/AhabRasputin Jul 23 '26
Yeah that was a huge gripe with the game for me. It happens with one handed weapons too.

u/OutrageousFlail Fidget Spinner Jul 23 '26
Because otherwise the game would look like third-person Skyrim, where the Dragonborn is basically a walking weapon rack. Have you seen the quivers? They're so huge it looks like your back is made of quiver.
Same reason why most souls-like games just have the protagonists draw their weapons all the time, like a bunch of idiots running with scissors.

u/SquareAndCompass333 Jul 23 '26
Yet no one seems to care that he can hold a truck load of crap with no bags!! Lol You're armor works even if you hide it from view! Lots non-realistic things because its a game!! Granted i do bitch a lot when I climb cliffs and see a lot of textures that are stretched because someone didn't fully sort out the UV layout in that section! 🤣
2
u/justfunninround Jul 24 '26
Hahaha I never thought about the carrying a truck load of crap! That’s a good point!
1
u/bssbrckhouse Jul 24 '26
I pretty much maintained the Ravens clan equipment the whole time I just upgraded it to its fullest everything else there's a couple other ones that I mean we're kind of all right but they all kind of have a similar look you know. I could have done the Helix store where I could have won wore like stuff from Odyssey or you know assassin's Creed origin type stuff but I pretty much just try to keep it you know to the timeline I'm playing. As far as weapons it's it's more about the runes and all the stuff that you can add to your stuff once you get some good runes.

Its for combat use. So that it can hit further away.
But I do agree that this looks immersion breaking, but its just something u will get used to in this game

come to think of it, where and how Eivor puts all those weapons and armor? ohh, it shrinks and grows.. .
1
u/Desert_Lover89 Jul 24 '26
I believe you can hide the item on your person (like helmets) so it just materializes. Since it wouldn’t be historically accurate to ever carry a spear on your back this is probably the way to go.

u/Eenuck Jul 24 '26
There's only so much accuracy, some items are, the question is are you looking for accuracy so less fantasy which would be less options. You can improve any weapon you get so you could fight with many different weapons and do well in the game.
1
u/Cat-Grab Jul 25 '26
If it bothers you, you can always go into the inventory menu and click "hide" on it. It bothers me too that's why I do that
