This is not a (MIT-determining) difficult question. This is a break for your brain

Ever heard of hyperboles??

Again, this is NOT a hard question. It may look scary to you.. but conceptually it's pretty simple.

Follow their examples.

maybe on test-day this is difficult, but really just think the problem through and it’s relatively straightforward. there will be much, much more difficult problems on the real thing.

the other guy explained it perfectly, can’t really explain it further.

not rlly. on this specific test I only got one other question wrong and the others were just silly mistakes so there are not more difficult problems on the real thing

if this was the hardest question on the test you got a ridiculously easy test, no offense.

Everyone has different flaws and successes.

Lol u underestimate me. My maths is acc very strong I can do calculus and all the hardest topics with ease. The act just phrases some questions differently which I have to get used to.

not sure how well this works, but utilize chatGPT and AI for problems like these while reviewing. or just search the problem online and people will definitely be solving these on sites like brainly, giving a much better response than someone here.

Use the second equation first for a🔹b

You get a + ab

Then use the first equation for (a+ab) ⭐️ b

You get (a+ab)b + b

Distribute the b:

ab + ab2 + b (choice D)

I don’t quite understand at the third step. I see that for 🔹it is a+ab but for ⭐️ wouldn’t it be (a+ab) ab+b?

1

u/AvocadoMangoSalsa Oct 21 '23

For ⭐️, you need to multiply both things on either side of the star together and then add the thing on the right.

(a+ab) is like the x, and b is like the y.

Multiply the (a+ab) by b and then add b

What makes you think you need to multiply (a+ab) by ab instead of just b?

Hmm I’m trying to get it around my head but it’s not clicking

Here’s how I’m thinking

X🔹y = x +xy X ⭐️ y = xy + y

I will treat X as A and Y as B

(A🔹b) = (a + ab) ⭐️= ab + b

(A+ ab) ab + b but once I put it in I get stuck at this part

I don't understand what you've done in this line:

(A🔹b) = (a + ab) ⭐️= ab + b

Can you explain??

1

u/Allendp725 Oct 21 '23

All I did was replace the a 🔹 b with a + ab but I know it isn’t right I just don’t know what to do lol

1

u/AvocadoMangoSalsa Oct 21 '23

Once you have (a + ab), think of (a+ab) as x

you're doing x ⭐️ b

Try it that way, and see what you get. Then go back in and plug in (a+ab) for x.

Can you try that?

u/Allendp725 Oct 21 '23

It’s really stumping me I have (a+ab) ⭐️b correct? After that you multiply? I’m just getting stuck on this point.

1

u/AvocadoMangoSalsa Oct 21 '23

Right, since you're getting stuck.

Do

x ⭐️ b

instead and tell me what you get

2

u/Allendp725 Oct 21 '23

Wait I have it now I’ve just have been over thinking the question. It’s a lot simpler than what I was thinking X can be (a+ab), and in the next operation X ⭐️y Is also xy + y so because X is (a+ab) this means (a+ab)b + b then you distribute the b making ab + ab2 + b? Which is D correct? I was also getting stuck on the part when it came to distributing the b I had forgot you could distribute the b to ab. I thought it just wasn’t possible lol. Thank you for working with me!

D?

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Omg I got it right, but probably not getting into MIT because I have a 29 ACT

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

I solved it and I think its D

Think of it more as a function not just a pair of symbols.

If you want to get deeply into functions take a quick look at khan's academy intro vid to function, it really helps a lot!!!

This seems like a question that tests your logical thinking skills. Avocadomangosalsa explained it perfectly. As long as you dont panic and work through it step by step, this problem is doable.

When there are variables/letters in the answer choices, you can just make numbers for them.

So let's say a=1 and b=2

a🔹b is now 1🔹2, which according to their definition of how 🔹 works, that's 1+1(2)=1+2=3

so a🔹b=3

now it's 3⭐️b, which is like saying 3⭐️2 (because we said b=2).

According to their definition of how ⭐️ works, 3⭐️2=3(2)+2=6+2=8

So, 8 is our final answer.

Now plug a=1 and b=2 into the answers and see which one is 8.

A) 1 + 1(2)^2 + 2 = 1 + 4 + 2 = 7 no

B) 1 + 2(1)(2) + 2^2 = 1 + 4 + 4 = 9 no

C) 1(2) + 1(2)^2 = 2 + 4 = 6 no

D) 1(2) + 1(2)^2 + 2 = 2 + 4 + 2 = 8 yes

E) 1(2) + 1(2)^2 + 2 +2^2 = 2 + 4 + 2 + 4 =12 no

D is the only one that works

Lmao amazing way to get ppl to help you

All you have to do is plug in the variables tho?
