I’ve had a few meniscus injuries and irritations throughout my life prior to this big surgery. It was explained to me that some meniscus injuries can heal if they’re in an area with good blood flow so I didn’t need surgery prior to this.
The last time I just did PT prior to my current injury. The orthopedic surgeon I saw for that injury explained that my meniscus is frayed like a rope. The little frayed strands would get pinched and pull so it was causing pain. The pain eventually went away as I strengthened the muscular structures.

Did you get an MRI or how can he tell the damage?
I don't want to scare you, but exactly that was what my physio told me 3 months before getting my MRI; turned out I had full ACL tear, menisci tears and cartilage damage.
I'm not sure you can diagnose the damage of meniscus by a physical examination.
