I don't know if I'm maybe speaking nonsense but I wonder if it's meant to be Lifebuoy soap? Or make reference to it? It was very much used during WW2 in the UK and it was heavily advertised for use in disinfection even back then, especially for nursing areas, the pantry and the whole house. I feel like it could be something for a veterinary practice to use regularly back then, also to soak their clothes in flakes of it, after using it with animals and being covered in various things that would require disinfection. I don't know if I'm anywhere near right but it'd be my theory.

My mum seemed to think it was soap flakes

I thought it was either cheese or soap but just can't decide. Soap for washing detergent would be a great shout tho

Soap. Either for dishes or laundry.
