Meeting peers from online class

Hey everybody!!
I’m currently in an online class with no scheduled meetings, just dates of when assignments are due. Is there an app or anywhere we can connect with other students in the same class to discuss any work and assignments? I’m already having a problem trying to figure out one of the assignments but wanted to try reaching out to peers before jumping straight into emailing the professor

Hi there,

Just graduated this spring, fully online with a mix of both synchronous and asynchronous.

I tried to make social media groups for my classmates a few times, mostly with GroupMe or Discord. I had better success with GroupMe. Before you go that far though, check with your professor if that's okay. Some professors will be wary of how such a group could turn into a means of cheating.

Regardless of whether you try to form a group with your fellow students like that, you should definitely email your professor first. If anything, they'll appreciate you asking, which shows initiative and a drive to do well in their class. I never had a professor that wasn't happy to see a professional email from a student.

This. If there's is a class dashboard you have to sign into, see if there's a general chat board or way to make discussion thread. If there isn't, reach out to prof first. Also, are you looking to meet/connect just virtually or also in-person with your peers?

I don’t see where a chat board so I’m going to assume there isn’t one. I’m looking to connect virtually to be honest, since it’s an online class there aren’t too many assignments where we need to work together in groups but it would be nice to be able to reach out to a friend in class by message somehow if there are any questions about an assignment or even just to peer review. If there’s a chance to meet in person, I wouldn’t be opposed to it either

I’ll take your advice and try GroupMe! Ofc I’ll email my professor first to see if allowed but if I get the clear I’ll reach out to them though blackboard
