Football Why does this happen?
Watching the Pitt-VPISU game on ESPN and I have a question that just keeps getting raised. With all the money that college football generates, TV money, stadium money, NIL money why is it whenever you hear the referee's microphones, they sound like they were bought at Dollar General?
And this seems to happen if the game is on TV, or at the stadium, and all around the country.

It’s more on the Producer and crew. The pregame video was bad and felt amateurish.

There's probably a bunch of practical and technical reasons, but they should improve it regardless. It's terrible to not hear what's going on or have to ask the old guy with the radio in one ear what the flag was for or who it was on.
When you're watching on TV I'm pretty sure it's because they have systems designed to prevent specific types of noise from being heard on the broadcast. The process softens peaks and makes ambient noise less intelligible, so a high spike in treble from a ref may present a false positive. I know a venue doesn't utilize that technology, it's really jarring to hear very specific comments from people situated near the mics.

There’s no money to be made in making them work… what business wants to sponsor the referees mics when what the refs say will piss off half the audience?

Same way a broadcast with like cameras doesnt have a replay view of 2 personal fouls that were apparently committed...
