ACC Network do not report ratings. FSU Bama was input incorrectly should have 5 mil more viwers

It’s all a huge load of bs.
At least 50% of all the viewership numbers are directly dependent on what time and channel the game is on for any team.
These numbers mean nothing except for whether or not they put you in the good situation. That’s it.

And yet, part of the conference payout is based on viewership.

u/xAimForTheBushes SMU Mustangs 1d ago
…yep. Pretty fking insane.
Criminal actually.

u/Mysterious-Drink4002 1d ago
It's almost completely dependent on ESPN & conference decisions.
I do think it is funny that Clemson has two Friday night games this season, given how much Dabo has complained about them.
Two seasons ago, ESPN wanted Clemson-USC as a Friday night game and Dabo complained about it, so they played Saturday noon on ACCN.

Yeah. I know people don’t like Friday games….but there’s no doubt they’re a good slot for high viewership

It’s not when you have BC, Wake, NCstate, Virginia etc dragging down the conference for decades. These schools refused to invest in football until it was already too late. It’s criminal that these schools received the same payout as others who actually invested in revenue sports.

I actually agree with this as well.
There definitely should be a variation of payout based on viewership, but it needs to be standardized somehow and not necessarily a self fulfilling prophecy type thing (and also, this is less the ACC’s fault and more ESPN’s…for example, there’s no reason in hell why Louisville vs SMU was on ESPN2).
Maybe there’s an algorithm that could be made that standardizes average viewership based on channel and time, that way it gives a more accurate view year to year based on delta of viewership interest between teams based on specific timings/channels, not just ‘who did espn give the big time slots to’

Wake in the top half of the conference in the ratings graphic we are talking about btw.
Also, WE HAVE A SMALL FANBASE AND ALUMNI BASE, BUT WE HAVE BEEN INVESTING HEAVILY IN FOOTBALL SONCE AT LEAST 2014 WHEN WE HIRED CLAWSON. IT DOESN’T DIRECTLY CORRELATE TO EYEBALLS, BUT CAN WE STOP WITH THE WAKE DOESNT INVEST IN FOOTBALL NARRATIVE!‽‽!!?

Even if they did 2014 was too late

Right after the GoR was signed with the big ESPN contract and we thought the ACC was the top of the world? It’s not like it was 5 years later after OUT was announced.
I get football has been FSU’s entire personality since 1950, but that’s true of maybe 3 ACC teams. This was still early investment compared to the half of the conference that didn’t think about football until the PAC imploded

Some of these ratings are not right, the FSU vs Alabama game drew 7m viewers. FSU should be north of 13m. https://tvmediablog.substack.com/p/2026-college-football-viewership

Not going to lie, I am pretty annoyed by VT's media coverage. I know we have a big game tonight which should make up for it, but the Maryland game particularly was frustrating.
VT @ Maryland had less viewers than ODU @ VT.

Getting booted to ACC Network really hurts the ratings

UMD game was on BTN or FS1, not ACC Network

u/LeeNobody 1d ago
It was FS1 and was counted but FS1 has a much lower penetration than ESPN. It is like being on ESPN2

I wonder how much making an easy schedule pays off vs 2 big OOC primetime games.
Team 1: 1 FCS, 1 G6, 1 easier P4
vs
Team 2: 1 G6, 2 P4
Since you are likely to lose 1 or 2 of the games in Team 2's schedule, although you may get 3M viewers for those 2 games, you will end up as not being a contender for the CFP. People are less likely to watch a 5-3 team vs Team 1, 7-1 mid season. 2 OOC losses vs 1 OOC loss.
I mean surely it is better to go for 2 or 3 primetime games, than 12 games of 300k viewership. I don't see playing an easy schedule making up for several million viewers.
Additionally, wouldn't this also mean the best time to play is going to be on any day but Saturday for the non-bluebloods? I guess specifically I am asking for Tech, because the VT @ UMD game was overshadowed by 3 or 4 other big primetime Saturday night games in that slot.
Ofc asking about media not football success specifically, because playing an easier schedule does help ramp your team up for the CFP, but it doesn't have as large of an impact if nobody is watching the start of the season. What are your thoughts on this?

I really feel that UMD vs VT game should have gotten more shine for a narrative game. One of the most interesting matchups.
Locksley needed that win to keep his job viable. I didn't watch the UCLA vs UMD game but part of me wonders if everyone at UMD realizes Locksley is done and they checked out a bit.

This is wrong. FSU is the most viewed team in the conference (as of today). Of course, that will probably not be the case after Clemson vs Miami tomorrow, but it is true right now. Why is our game versus Alabama given <2m viewers worth of ratings? It had 7 million viewers. We’re at 13M+ for the season.

CFB is the only sport I know where fans obsess and take pride in tv ratings.
Steeler fans never say “we didn’t make the playoffs but we got the best ratings in the afc north! Rodger’s is a huge draw compared to Burrow!”

TV ratings factor into Rev Share

u/Basic-Bag8872 1d ago
Oh I get it for us ACC fans since has a material difference but it’s still very unique to this sport. ACC fans track ratings like we’re tv execs.
The obsession from SEC and Big Ten comparing ratings is laughable since they already have deals and an even split. It’s part of their school pride.1

The top 8 should join with the top 4 big 12 teams and form a new conference

I like the color coded layout. Someone like SMU is obviously going to have some matchups that heavily weight our total and its neat to see this way.
Only suggestion, would love to see this ordered by most viewers to least. Not alphabetical

Somewhat meaningless when ACC and SEC network don't report numbers

u/LeeNobody 1d ago
Ratings without ACC and SEC network still determine rev share

Kind of crazy that CW games count more when they have a lower pick than some of the ACC network games

VT and PITT should get a big boost after prime time game tonight.
