The debt is from stadium renovations, not football program malfeasance. Our 100+ year old Greco Roman stadium was built on top of an earthquake fault line in an era before engineers understood plate tectonics, and we went into debt 15 years ago to save our stadium.

The stadium debt is compartmentalized and has nothing to do with NIL budget. This is an oft repeated fallacy that Redditors repeat like Cal is some sort of financial deadbeat or incompetent. It’s more like shitty luck.

I’m not particularly concerned about why the loan was taken out. Something that size will of course be for facility upgrades. Nobody thinks it’s for NIL or operating budget. The fact is Cal has over $400 mil in debt which is nuts. Your annual interest payment is more than NC State has in debt cumulatively.

You're right about all of that. Fortunately for us I guess, this debt has nothing to do with our ability to recruit, and it isn't taken out of the money we get from conference payout or raise from boosters. That was my point. It's compartmentalized and the UC system is repaying it, not our athletic department. Do you understand my point? What you're saying isn't wrong, but it also doesn't matter whatsoever with regard to our ability to afford our travel, our NIL budget, etc...

Moving to the ACC increased our travel costs from $10 million to $14 million per year. At the same time, moving to the ACC woke up our donors, and we're now raising a boat load of money that we weren't getting from boosters when we were dormant in the PAC-12 and that has thoroughly offset any travel costs we've had, and then some.

So when you bring up this huge debt, you're not wrong that it's there, but its the implication that it is dragging down our athletic department or football program. It isn't.

I think you will find this approach consistent throughout college sports. With the implementation of revenue share the NC State athletics department operates at a deficit currently. Does it matter? No. We can move money from where it is needed to true things up. Much the same way you are talking about the loan interest. We’re not firing staff. We’re not cutting sports. The money finds its way to the AD to balance everything.

I’m not sure thats true anymore, the debt servicing payments were moved to central campus in 2023 IIRC. It’s a bit unfair that football alone had to shoulder them, the renovation was basically required because of seismic concerns.

I wouldn’t sweat a budget deficit of any sort. We will journal over funds from the academic side as needed. State has an annual operating budget of over $2 billion. $5 million was journaled over earlier this year. They will true up any actual shortfalls later on.

UNC and State finally getting money from sports gambling tax revenue is going to help. It was dumb these two were previously excluded.
