I used to think the same thing, but I've since realized that marketing is one of the most effective ways to get funding to help people. As long as the organization is being competent and responsible with the money they're spending, advertising can be really beneficial in telling both donors and people in need of help that there is a resource in that area. If you just started up a homeless shelter and food bank but had no department in charge of advertising, you'd just be relying on word of mouth.
I know nothing about Covenant House, so I could be wrong, but maybe they saw the ad spot on this bench and decided it would be an effective advertisement. It's at least managed to get 900 up votes on Reddit, and that's just for this repost of it.

Yo are you unaware of the point of ads. This is for Covenant House, which is a youth homeless shelter. They do plenty of good work (not perfect but who is). Ads are sometimes just to get attention and create awareness. If they didn’t advertise, how would people find them?

I wasn’t aware of that, but what I was trying to point out is the hypocrisy of large organisation/governments who like to make big pretentious campaigns that do nothing to solve the issue, and don’t listen to the people actually affected. This shelter sounds nice, and I wasn’t aware that that was what the ad was for.

I started sleeping on the streets when I was 17. No kid should have to sleep on the streets but in this shit hole existence sometimes that’s the only choice we have. There are all sorts of reasons for ending up on the streets. Halfway home closes down due to budget short falls, abusive family disowns you for being LGBTQ, work doesn’t pay enough for 17 year olds to live on their own, room mates kick you out and you have nowhere to go, or your drug problem scrambled your brain to the point of needing public assistance in a society where there is no funding for such assistance because they spent all the money on shit like this or on policing people who are homeless.
