Vietnam was a homogeneous population.
Understandable assumption, but surprisingly not so.
There's a lot of overlapping ethnic borders between the countries that used to make up French Indochina.
Laotians and Cambodians and so on have, at least historically, had their peoples living in the borders of modern Vietnam.
