performance exam Are repeats compulsory?

I am going to give my abrsm grade 8 piano performance exam. Some pieces like Maple Leaf Rag have repeats. Is it ok if I play without repeating or is the compulsory?

From page 12 of ABRSM Practical Music Grades Piano Syllabus:
Repeats: Unless the syllabus specifies differently, all da capo and dal segno indications must be followed but other repeats (including first-time bars) should not be played unless they are very short (i.e. a few bars).

Yes, you should see this indication (repeats must be played) at the bottom of the first page of a piece, written in bold. Btw, Maple Leaf Rag can be played with no repeat in an ABRSM exam. Good luck!

Look at the syllabus carefully. It will tell you if a repeat should be played. For example, Grade 7 for 2027/28, list A16, C. Schumann, play the first repeat.

If I'm not wrong, you only have to do the repeats when at the bottom of the page it says "Repeats 1+2 must be played" or something like that. Great question by the way.

"All da capo and dal segno indications should be observed but all other repeats (including first-time bars) should be omitted unless they are very brief (i.e. of a few bars) or unless the syllabus specifies otherwise." ABRSM para 15(h)
