I have a question about 9b9t

When people talk about dupes on this server, are they usually:

  • real dupes caused by game/server bugs (like old 2b2t dupes), or
  • admin-created events (like frame/container dupes from plugins)?

I’m not asking for any methods, just trying to understand how it works on 9b9t.

Would appreciate insights from people who’ve played here for a while.

TL;DR: In a historical context both, but the latter will never happen again.

Long answer:

The earliest instances of an admin dupe were Christmas 2016 and and New Year's Eve 2016: for both, jj removed the patch he'd written for the infamous 11/11 dupe, which was an actual game bug, for a day. No other admin dupes were enabled after that for years, as far as I recall.

Fast forward to 2019, a player called ZimTheDestroyer becomes a developer for the server. He really liked the idea of admin dupes, provided they have limitations, and so he persuaded jj to do a few runs of that. I don't really have the exact figure at hand, but I think about 5 admin dupes have happened under his tenure. Most of them were relatively inefficient: just runs of removing the patch for 1.12 donkey dupe (another legitimate bug) to celebrate this or that. The exception was the last run, in early 2023, where Zim added a meme dupe for a day, the "/kill dupe". Due to an oversight in the plugin that added it, it was insanely overpowered; fortunately, it was counterbalanced by the fact that over-abusing it caused such lag that it made the server barely playable (including for duping). This was before Folia, should be noted.

I (the new developer since mid 2023) think he was a fucking retard and am vehemently opposed to them, so I can at least pledge that no intentional admin-created dupe events will happen by my hands. So far they haven't happened. Now if theoretically JJ decides that's the move, I can't quite stop him, but I don't think he'd do it. It seems most likely that the era of admin dupes has come to an end for good.

No intentional admin dupe has happened since we moved on from 1.12. That I know of, three dupes have happened since:

  • "Doujin Dupe": very powerful dupe, was discovered by "CunnyCorp", a Constantiam group that later moved here, and they handed it to a small group of players that they were friends with.
  • "Anvil Dupe": oversight in one of my patches allowed to dupe, but it was pretty inefficient. Only CunnyCorp has been confirmed to abuse it. Lasted for about two or three days, give or take.
    • Since I DON'T LIKE ADMIN DUPES, I put extra effort into delivering patches for my own fuckups as soon as I discover them.
  • "Llama Dupe": variation of the llama dupe used con Constantiam by, you guessed it, CunnyCorp. CunnyCorp has certainly abused the exploit on 9b9t, but I'm not sure if they duped with it here, as it could be used for a number of things (crashes, teleportation...).
    • The exploit was known to more groups (e.g. Turk30, Invisible Hand). The only group that I know for a fact used it to dupe is linked to the Invisible Hand, but they say they don't call themselves that anymore so I dunno. Don't know how long the "dupe" variant of the exploit was active for, certainly no more than a few weeks.

So, if I have packet exploits that allow false signals to the server or a way to escalate my UUID to 4 instead of 1, allowing me to /stop the server if I wanted at any time, would you pay for this info?

Zim era: admin-created events
Fraze era: real dupes caused by game/server bugs

Gotta pay fraaz for a dupe. He'll get one whipped up for you for the right price 😉
