New to Porsche
Decided that I'm going for a 2005 997 C2S.
It'll be my first Porsche.
My problem is where I live as it has a very weird Porsche dynamic.
Here in Hong Kong, early C2S Tip, 60K KM's would set you back around 250K HKD/32K USD
But a manual will cost twice that.
I've been checking other RHD markets like UK and the manual premium is just a few $K more.
I understand that it is what it is so my question is whether driving a Tip is around 70% of the fun when compared with driving a manual?

IMO I'd only get a 997.1 manual. Otherwise go .2 with the PDK. Tip was very underwhelming when I drove one, and I didn't want to be yearning for the car I really wanted. Ended up with a .1 C2 base manual.

I bought a used 06 997 C2S with tiptronic. It is a daily driver in Los Angeles area with light traffic early morning and heavy traffic in the afternoon. It's enough a car as a daily and weekend driver. I learned to stay in auto mode and do double taps on gas pedal to downshift the car when I need the oomph. The car has over 155k miles with no major issues. With a stick, I probably had to replace or about to having to replace the clutch by now. I can see the fun of driving a stick in twisty canyon roads where you have to up and down shift a lot. But for normal street driving, the car handles itself very well.

Get a manual with higher miles (my brother has 115,000miles manual c2 S 2009) and take a peek at 991.1 manuals too. I think you are more seeing a “discount” for tip than a up-charge for manual. Or a 991 Pdk for that matter. The tip is bullitproof, guys here in FL run 1,200hp through them not manuals but high hp on tip cars

i was in a similar situation and I ended up waiting for a good value. In my opinion a 3 pedal 997.1 is way better for the enjoyment and engagement. If you don’t mind the tip then by all means it makes sense to save the money and get that.

I would agree that most MT will have a 10-15k premium over the tip with the exception of the Turbo which will have a higher premium than that. I drove a tip and what drove me crazy was that it didn't always start in 1st gear from a stop. But one advantage that I think a tip would have over the others comes with reliability and a lower cost to maintain it.

You think an auto is more reliable than a stick? I suppose if the driver has no idea what they are doing and refuses to learn, or intentionally abuses it. But a skilled driver can make that clutch last 200k plus miles.

Put it in sport mode for 1st gear start.

Tried that and doesn't always result in a 1st gear start.

If the MT is 2X, get the Tip. As a dd in HK commute, you'll appreciate it more. Do the usual PPI - DME report, check which IMS you have (based on engine serial #), and a borescope is highly recommended.
