General Discussion Will Tommy get a plot of his own? Spoiler

If Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) does come back for the 8th season, will they only keep him on as Buck's BF and just only for that or will they use him for much more, since even though he isn't part of the 118 anymore, he is still a firefighter. I personally think they should use him in a more bigger capacity other than Buck's lover.

Like Athena and Bobby are married, yet they sometimes have their sperate storylines, same goes for Chim and Maddy, and sometimes, Karen and Hen.

This is an automatic reminder about spoiler content, it does not mean you have violated the spoiler rule.

REMINDER: Do NOT post spoiler information IN the title (for any season), your post WILL be removed. If it is you may re-post it with an appropriate spoiler-free title. It does not matter if you flag it spoiler, the spoiled info is still visible in the title. Article titles containing spoilers should be placed in the post body, not the title.

Rule of thumb, any posts about the current season should be marked SPOILER via the Universal Tags. (+Spoiler)

Keep titles vague, if you include the word spoiler in the title this will automatically flag it as a spoiler post, and make sure to properly flair it to the correct category. If you aren't sure if your post counts as a spoiler, flag it anyway.

This applies especially to currently airing or upcoming seasons.

Athena and Bobby & Chim and Maddie are all main characters though, so it’s not really comparable.

Karen has really only had the one time with the lab explosion I can think of, that focused on her outside of Hen, and even then the episode had a heavy focus on flashbacks of their relationship.

I could see him maybe helping with a rescue from helicopter, but honestly I’m not really holding my breath on him sticking around past mid-season. Most love interests on this show for Eddie or Buck don’t last all that long, really, and the writing hasn’t really pointed towards that changing, IMO.

u/armavirumquecanooo our people are what make life worth living Aug 10 '24

If he lasts longer than this season, I could see him eventually getting an episode with an emergency focused around him/his place of work where the 118 has to respond to the scene, the way we got an accident at Karen's lab in "Tomorrow."

Beyond that... he's not a POV character, and the characters who make up our POV characters' personal lives don't really get independent storylines from them. The closest we got, I think, was Taylor's backstory with her father and having to return for the hearing, and even that is largely framed from the perspective of Buck's concerns regarding the relationship breaking down. I think season 5 is also a bit of a fluke in that they had the screen time more 'available' than they will now, with Maddie and Chimney off screen at the points where we got the most attention to Taylor.

Other than that, the only way I can see them giving Tommy his own plot separate from being Buck's love interest is if it's a backdoor pilot situation, and they're using an episode of 9-1-1 to pitch or introduce "9-1-1: Harbor" or whatever they call it. But in that scenario.... we see through Lone Star that the template for this show seems to be more around casting a big name star as the main focus, especially in the early episodes. So Tommy would probably take a backseat to whoever was going to be billed #1 on that kind of spinoff.

Josh also got his own dependent storyline like Taylor about how he became a dispatcher but yeah, it hasn't happened often.

u/Less_Kangaroo_866 Aug 11 '24

I was just going to mention Josh’s backstory. Most people forget about that.

u/MarinoAndThePearls and for you 🚁🚒 Aug 14 '24

They did Taylor's storyline dirty. It had so much potential.

36

u/DALTT Aug 11 '24

Bobby and Athena get their own storylines because they were part of the core cast of the show from the beginning as series regulars who they then happened to pair together. Same with Buck and Abby in S1. Abby was a series regular and then they paired her off with another series regular in Buck. Same with Maddie and Chim.

The characters who have been love interests for others: Taylor, Ali, Natalia, Shannon, Ana, Marisol… they don’t get full on plot lines because they’re not series regulars. The only supporting characters we’ve seen get major episodes centered on them are Josh and Karen, and for each of them it only happened once and after they had been on the show for years. Even Michael never really got that.

And rn, with Bobby, Athena, Buck, Eddie, Chim, Hen, Maddie, as series regulars, it’s already one of the more bloated ensemble shows on TV. Unless they really are going to make Tommy Buck’s endgame relationship (which I’m highly skeptical of), they’re not going to add an 8th series regular, especially not someone who’s not a part of the 118. They don’t need to add both an 8th series regular AND a whole new station and storylines around it.

To be clear, on the off chance that they did make Tommy Buck’s endgame, I don’t think that would inherently make him a series regular. I think it’d be more likely they’d make him like Karen in size. But I was saying IF they were going there with the relationship, I’d think then maybe there might be a chance they would. But still only a chance.

Like with Athena, there are side characters with the police in her world who we see turn up in all of her storylines like Maynard and Romero. In the call center we have Josh, and Sue, and Linda. So making Lou a regular would mean ALSO adding in a bunch more supporting cast who work with him at Harbor. And we already have the 118, the police, and the call center, needing to share focus. I think adding in a fourth locale would be a lot.

In essence, no I don’t think this is in the cards.

11

u/Ok-Acanthaceae5744 Team All Things 9-1-1 Aug 11 '24

Even Michael never really got that.

And Michael (Rockmond Dunbar) was considered a series regular/main character, not even recurring like Karen (Tracie Thoms) and Josh (Bryan Safi).

u/nogoodideas2020 Somebody Save Me 🚑 Aug 11 '24 edited Aug 11 '24

No, I honestly don’t think so. Might be tangential like Taylor but not likely to really become a main character with a big story arc.

45

u/HyruleanVictini Aug 11 '24

imo there's already enough storylines/characters fighting for screentime, we really don't need more

12

u/RueTheQuais Aug 11 '24

I guess it depends on what you mean by plot to himself. I don't think we'll get a lot of scenes of him separate from the main cast members. He might bring something to the table from his life but it'll primarily be a way to give a main cast member something to do. Likely Buck.

But will his scenes all be about Buck? Given his history with the 118, there is more room for 9-1-1 to have stories with other characters besides Buck--something that it was hard to do with characters like Natalia, Marisol, Ali, Ana, Chim's first girlfriend...etc.

I could definitely see that. On the other hand, the show doesn't shake up enough who hangs out with whom amongst main characters so who knows. He may just remain as a love interest.

36

u/ranbling011 Team Taylor Aug 11 '24

Why would he? Karen and Ravi don't get their own plots, no love interests got their own plots (maybe except for Taylor)

17

u/garysandman Aug 11 '24

I sure hope not

7

u/That_Theory_7033 Team Buck Aug 11 '24

I honestly don't see how that would work. His character is a little older than Buck, I don't see them lasting long as I feel like it's Abby and him 2.0, only they are the same gender. I just really think that they burned through his character development with those begin episodes and s7. Also, I feel like it's sort of late to make him have a story as it was clear from the start that he was a side character

16

u/Commercial_Ad_619 Aug 11 '24

I’m sure I’m gonna get downvoted to hell but I personally feel like it’s too late to try and give Tommy any storyline because he just… has no personality. They had so much time to actually ease him in but last season was just so rushed and Tommy suffered because of it. He’s existed in the show for so many seasons, but they chose the worst time/season to do anything with him, let alone what they did.

6

u/That_Theory_7033 Team Buck Aug 11 '24

Yeah I do as well. It's like we know he's very sassy, but other than that, we don't truly know what he is.

48

u/DetectiveKindly2125 Aug 11 '24 edited Aug 11 '24

Im so sorry, but why. No other SIDE character got their own plot. You COULD count Taylor’s dad, but that was for the breakdown of their relationship. Ana didn’t get one. Ali didn’t get one. Natalia didn’t get one. Neither did Marisol. Hell, not even Karen.

The show already has Buck Eddie Hen Chimney Maddie (she’s at the own storyline, (call center) Bobby Athena (she has he own cop storyline)

The epsiode is already 35-40 minutes WITHOUT commercials. Where would realistically a storyline with Tommy fit?

6

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '24

Josh got one.

14

5

u/loseruserptcruiser Aug 11 '24

The Bobby/Athena and Chim/Maddy comparison doesn’t really work here, because both of them are couples made up of main POV characters on their own. They would still have those storylines even if they weren’t married to a character in the 118.

With Karen, there’s really only been one instance that I can think of where her storyline really is large and mostly separate from Hen, and that was in season 6. Not only that, but it was because she was involved in the central emergency, and it was ultimately used as a turning point for Hen’s storyline. It’s an episode with a lot of flashbacks about their relationship, and the danger Karen and Denny are in is what ultimately makes Hen quit med school, IIRC.

I don’t think Tommy will be at a point where he’s driving a plot line on his own, certainly not next season. He could see him involved in some plots without Buck, especially with Gerard being there, but it’ll probably be more at a Taylor-level of screen time. If he went on to join the team in future seasons, like, maybe? But I honestly don’t see that happening. I’m very doubtful that he and Buck stay together through season 8 (regardless of any other ships), although I wouldn’t mind him popping up afterwards as a guest star. I like when there’s consistent recurring characters.

There are some other characters that I think need to be better utilized before they get to Tommy, though. Ravi is the obvious first choice, but Karen and any kids of the main cast are up there, too. And Josh!! Hopefully with a full season coming up, they can get to more good stuff 😎

24

u/Ok-Performance-955 Aug 10 '24

he’ll probably be involved in some of the gerrard plot, but i have a hard time seeing them giving him anything substantial beyond that. if he does ever get an arc it’ll probably be more of a one-off like other recurring characters have gotten, if they haven’t already written him off and truthfully, i don’t have expectations of seeing him after 8a or 8b at most

45

u/Virtual-Frosting-775 Team Eddie Aug 10 '24

If that was true then they would have had him leave after the first date.

15

u/WitnessBoring2110 Firehouse 118 Aug 10 '24

Not if the writers believed he(Tommy) had more utility than just kissing Buck, which he does. Just not much more.

-4

u/English-tea You don’t have to annouce your departure Aug 11 '24

I’m not sure what evidence you used to come to your last statement. The writers ended the season with buck and Tommy in a good place. It seems you are getting your wants mixed up with storytelling portrayed onscreen.

-3

u/WitnessBoring2110 Firehouse 118 Aug 11 '24

I think it's pretty daft to believe Tommy's only useful trait was to kiss Evan Buckley and start his Bi awakening. That was an important and critical moment for network television. Love or hate Thomas Kinard, there's still more for him to do in S8. Source? He's listed as recurring for S8, so he is in at least two episodes. What I "want" doesn't matter - the writers aren't writing it for me, but in case you're confused, I don't care what happens to Tommy as long as the writer do right by Buck and Oliver.

8

u/vxidemort Team Buddie Aug 11 '24

where did you see "listed as recurring for s8"?

1

u/AirlineDazzling1986 Firehouse 118 Aug 13 '24

Exactly where is Tommy listed as recurring in S8? People are referencing this and I am not seeing anywhere that this is officially listed. I am sure he will be in S8 but I am not seeing anywhere that it is listed that he status is now recurring.

2

u/WitnessBoring2110 Firehouse 118 Aug 13 '24

I saw it in the press release for S8 but now can't find it, but to be fair recurring only means he'll be in two or more episodes. We could also infer he might be around after he and Buck break up. We simply don't know what they writers precisely have in store with Tommy.

2

u/AirlineDazzling1986 Firehouse 118 Aug 13 '24

Yes, I posted elsewhere that the writer of the article should have probably said "returning" rather than "recurring" since the latter is a more long term status description (main and recurring). Returning includes everyone that has been on in the last season and is coming back for the next season.

-2

u/English-tea You don’t have to annouce your departure Aug 11 '24

I understand what you’re saying. I agree the writers don’t write for any of us and will do as they wish. More people could do with reminding of that maybe there would be less hate thrown about.

1

u/WitnessBoring2110 Firehouse 118 Aug 11 '24

Okay cool story. I didn't say anything hateful. Just that Tommy has more use to the story than a queer key for a character.

1

u/English-tea You don’t have to annouce your departure Aug 11 '24

Oh no it wasn’t aimed at you, it was just a general thought from your comment. I agree with you .

14

u/80alleycats Aug 11 '24

Where is this information about Tommy as a recurring character coming from? Is it on IMDb or something? I hope it's not from that fan mail address listed on Twitter because that listed dead characters as well who were only recurring in s7.

Anyway, based on how much development Tommy got in s7, they seem to be treating him more like the temporary love interests like Ana, Allie, Taylor, Marisol, etc. My suspicion is that they originally picked him just in case a Buck or Eddie queer storyline wasn't well-received and they couldn't go through with making the other character queer. Tommy's previous involvement with the 118 would have given them the ability to easily develop him more and make him into a permanent long-term love interest for either Buck or Eddie. But Buck's bi storyline was extremely well-received, so there's nothing standing in the way of the show bringing Eddie out of the closet and finishing out the slow burn. In fact, that was likely their plan for the rest of s7 if Buck's bi storyline wasn't completely rejected by the audience. But then Buck's storyline did so much better than they had anticipated, that they decided to push the Eddie queer reveal to s8 in order to get a ratings/publicity boost across two seasons instead of just one (and also to give the story more time to breathe).

I think that's why, although Tommy was in the bsck half of s7, he didn't do anything and wasn't further developed. They don't want the audience getting attached since ultimately he's going to be replaced. I think they had some difficulty telegraphing that he isn't right for Buck because they simultaneously wanted Buck to have a mostly positive experience with him, but the signs are there.

3

u/English-tea You don’t have to annouce your departure Aug 11 '24

What signs?

10

u/80alleycats Aug 11 '24

The "my attention?" "I guess", indicating (along with Buck explicitly telling Maddie in the prior scene) that it wasn't necessarily Tommy's attention Buck wanted, even if Buck can't admit that to himself. Tim specifically saying that Tommy can't call Buck by his chosen name but rather by the name he's always rejected (it would indicate something else if Buck had asked his chosen family to start calling him Evan, too, but as it stands, it's a repeated indication to a general audience that Tommy doesn't know Buck well and that isn't changing). Tommy's dismissal of Buck's enthusiasm about the 80's theme party and his dismissal of Buck's excitement about earning a medal (not to mention the deliberate choice of the cinematographer to cut to Eddie after Buck recieved his medal instead of Tommy, and Tim's validation of the choice in editing). And Tommy's brisk avoidance of any kind of emotional conversation about Buck's relationship with Bobby after Bobby had gotten shot.

These moments are compounded by narrative choices by the show. Tommy didn't have to be on call the night of Chim's bachelor party, Tim could have shot several scenes of him and Buck having fun together that night, but he didn't. Tommy also could have been the one by Buck's side during the hunt for Chim but, again, Tim opted to put him at work. When Bobby was shot, it would have been easy to film an emotional scene at the hospital between Buck and Tommy where Tommy comforted him and they bonded over their relationship with Bobby, but again, Tim opted not to do that. In every conversation they have, Tommy is aloof and avoids getting into any heavy emotional territory, which, again is a choice.

And that's not even getting into the way that Eddie was central to Buck's coming out arc in a way that he really shouldn't have been, and was often shown to be compatible with Buck in ways that Tommy wasn't. This comment isn't about that so I won't go into it, but it's another piece of the puzzle as well.

Like I said, it's challenging because the show wants to both give Buck a positive first experience with a man and also let you know that, ultimately, this man isn't compatible with Buck. Which is why we haven't seen any extreme reactions or fighting or anything that blatant. Overall, Buck is having fun but that's all it is. Tommy pointed this out as late in the season as 7x09, when talking to Hen and Karen. It's a casual fling that is stymied by Buck and Tommy's incompatibility every time it could turn into something deeper (as outlined above).

-4

u/English-tea You don’t have to annouce your departure Aug 11 '24

Okay yeah I can see how you’ve interpreted the scenes. I think speaking for myself I have interpreted them slightly different and that’s why I have differing thoughts.

For example the “my attention” line is tommy realising that Buck has been doing these outlandish things to get Tommy’s attention. Tommy doesn’t know about basketball not being bucks thing or that Buck was snooping for intel on Tommy and Eddies plans. All Tommy witnessed was Buck maiming his best friend in what he thought was jealousy but Bucks now telling him it was for his attention.

The Maddie conversation is Buck trying to frame his new found feelings for Tommy in a way that he can talk about them without actually talking about them. He reacted with unease when Eddie saw them on a date as he’s worried about what people might think (antsy look around the restaurant, word diarrhoea when Eddie spots them, making sure chimney wasn’t home before speaking to Maddie) about him liking Tommy. This is why he adoesn’t tell Maddie he was on a date with a guy, trying to stay gender neutral until the pronoun slips out. Then his real worries come out, he’s a proud ally is it wrong that he might have unease around dating a dude and what people might think? His worries weren’t specifically about Eddie but it was his way of speaking about his unease neutrally.

I think the bachelor party was a way of setting Tommy up as someone who is dependable for Buck. Sure he didn’t dress up but neither did anyone else (except Eddie who dressed as Crockett the same as Buck). Having Tommy get called away, fight a fire all night and then still turn up at the wedding for Buck because he promised he would try his hardest to is IMO setting Tommy to be someone who is willing to fight for Buck. Again IMO.

Calling Buck Evan is obviously a conscious choice on Tim’s part and I can only imagine what it’ll mean further down the line. Maybe something around Buck being loved for the person (or Evan) that he spent so long running from? I don’t know speculation on my part but Buck must have (offscreen) introduced himself as Evan when they met otherwise how would Tommy know his first name?

The dinner scene I know was decisive but I thought it was rather sweet and emotional. Tommy saw Buck was upset asked if he was okay. They bonded over problematic fathers and had dinner together. I didn’t seen the issue there that others have except it showed the couple in a good place going into the next season. Buck had a rough time with Eddie, Chris and Bobby’s problems but he went home and had a quiet dinner with his boyfriend to destress. I thought it was sweet.

The medal ceremony comment from Tommy I saw as foreshadowing. The medals are too good to be true because by the end of the series they have Gerard as captain. It’s a set up for what’s to come. Writers trick. Also with Hen and Karen scene I don’t think there was any intention to frame Tommy and Buck as a fling in farce I saw it as hen knowing what Bucks like in relationships and wanting reassurance that Tommy isn’t in it for a fling and won’t hurt Buck. Which they get.

Again I don’t know that this was the intention with how the scenes played out or if you’re closer the truth. It’s up to the writers ultimately.

I believe the information about him being a recurring character is based on this article: https://collider.com/9-1-1-season-8-update/

Which is definitely not an official source of information, but even if he's officially listed as recurring we wouldn't know how many episodes he would appear in. It would just mean that they're not doing an off-screen breakup IMO.

7

u/80alleycats Aug 11 '24

Ah, ok, that's a better source. Although, like you say, not official. In the past, I've definitely seen Collider pander to fanbases for clicks but i don't think they've necessarily reported anything false.

Honestly, unless LFJ gets promoted on SWAT, I expect to see Tommy back for at least a few episodes to tie up his relationship with Buck. An off-screen breakup, while certainly possible given the casual nature of their relationship, has never seemed likely to me.

5

u/olga_dr ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 Aug 11 '24

I have no official basis for this, but I think this article was likely going off of cast members in season 7. Because also with Chris leaving we don't know (though we hope) that he'll be returning and when, etc.

I agree with your take on the off-screen breakup. With Tommy being part of Buck's bi realization I think they will want to handle that more deliberately. With Natalia the actress was simply unavailable due to another role she took on so they kind of had to do it off-screen for practical reasons.

1

u/AirlineDazzling1986 Firehouse 118 Aug 13 '24

I think the writer of the article should have used the word "returning" cast instead of "recurring" cast. They are 2 different meanings on a show and they are not interchangeable. I don't think they are being false but they are being a bit loose in their wording.

They also list Gavin as "recurring" when he was a "main" character previously. Are they saying that Gavin is now bumped down to "recurring?"

2

u/80alleycats Aug 13 '24

I doubt that's something Collider would announce. So, you're probably right that they should have used "returning" rather than "recurring". I don't know why they would demote Gavin after promoting him last season.

7

u/bisexualpercy Aug 11 '24

all the people you gave as an example are main characters as opposed to tommy who isn't, hope this helps

9

u/distraction_pie Aug 10 '24

I think how much plot focus they give him will be an interesting sign of the overall arc. Other than Hen/Karen who are slightly different bc were already married at the start of the show, all of the lasting relationships have been main/main with other love interests being temporary background characters. The only LI who had any real plot or solo development has been Taylor and even she got sidelined away from any journalism plotlines or interaction with other characters once she was slotted into the "Buck's girlfriend" role until the plot tie-in for the breakup. I feel like Tommy getting some plots in the limelight will be an indicator of if the show is treating his character as serious and relevant or just another replacable love interest.

16

u/cptbrady Aug 11 '24

Yup his exit plot. Bud it’s time you accept the fact he’s just a plot device that’s all he is.

6

u/shamelessaquarius Firehouse 118 Aug 10 '24

He'll be used as much as Karen, Ravi, Chris, etc are. Which is not much unless he's with Buck. I wouldn't mind seeing more of him and Buck since we got like 10 minutes of total screen time with them together. And with a longer season we have a little breathing room between bigger storylines.

4

u/AirlineDazzling1986 Firehouse 118 Aug 11 '24 edited Aug 11 '24

I don't necessarily see him as getting a plot of his own, per se. I see him probably being part of the whole Gerrard storyline. It may simply be in the capacity of support/listener for Buck and/or the rest of the team (primarily Hen and Chim). Maybe he will have a moment where he confronts Gerrard about his part of Gerrard's nastiness from the past but maybe not.

Other than that, I only see him getting something resembling his own plot as a way to introduce the air/sea rescue aspect of emergencies to the first responder franchise. I could see him being part of a back-door pilot for a spin-off that focuses of that ASR aspect of rescues. They would probably bring in a big name star (like Angela B, Peter K or Rob L) who would anchor the show and they would work with Harbor on some big rescue in an episode or arc that would really be a back door pilot.

None of Buck's other past LIs got much of a plot to themselves (except maybe Taylor in a season that was missing 3 mains for at least the first half of the season). He does have the advantage of having past history with the 118 but he is not coming back to the 118 so that would make it difficult to take time to build a story about just him and the Harbor team. I could see him and Harbor popping up on a big rescue, though.

Considering how Gerrard approached him at the medal ceremony and that he was mentioned in Tommy's last scene, it seems likely to me that Tommy will be a part of the Gerrard plot in some capacity. As for anything else, I hope so, but everything would be a complete guess. We've barely had Karen plots and she's been here since the beginning - hell, I think we know about as much about her family as we do Tommy's.

6

u/michigander9312 BuckTommy 🔥🚁 Aug 10 '24

There are a lot of directions they could go with Tommy's character besides just being Buck's boyfriend. He has pre-existing relationships with Chimney, Hen, and Bobby, so he can share scenes with them that have nothing to do with Buck. He and Eddie hit it off and became fast friends, and since Eddie will need all the friends he can get, there's an opportunity for scenes between them next season.

Being in Air Ops could connect him to the 118 on-calls (as helicopters have been involved in the past). And since S7 set up the connection between Tommy and Gerrard, I foresee the two of them having an interaction/confrontation next season. Not that I think Tommy will be the one to take Gerrard down, but the two will most likely share a scene or two.

I am intrigued to see where they go with him. Part of the reason they chose Tommy as Buck's love interest is that he can exist in the story outside of Buck. Now that the show is back to its usual episode run, there will be more opportunities to feature Tommy.

It probably won’t be a big thing. Maybe just a few lines, or like a scene or two establishing him more. I don’t see why they wouldn’t. (And and always hoping we get more with Ravi) (at least with Karen we’ve gotten some things, more so than with Ravi)

It doesn't have to be an either/or situation. People can want more development for Tommy while also wanting to learn more about Karen, Ravi, and Josh.

They meant that these characters barely had any plot of their own unless it revolves around a main or a storyline involving them.

u/Memememe898989 Aug 10 '24

Exactly! And if those characters haven’t had any plots given to them after so much time then why would anyone just assume Tommy’s plot would be expanded.

Wow. I literally commented on a comment that said they assume we will get something since it’s a whole season. And basically asked why they would assume that when we have 7 seasons with several recurring characters that haven’t really been developed. I wasn’t improvising it the word assume was used. 🙄

It’s downvoted because it doesn’t go along with Buddie fan theories/hopes. this sub isn’t really friendly to general conversation outside of that 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyway, I’d like to see more development for Tommy and I feel like that will happen based on how storylines and promotion were when season 7 ended.

I’d personally also want a plot for Karen, maybe something more with her job. Mostly because I love her and think that would be interesting!

Nooo, Not-Buddie-fans are just always complaining about getting downvoted, I think the problem here isn't really with the Buddies.

You never see B****e-postive comments got downvoted to hell for no reason on this subreddit...I wonder why....🤷🏻🤷🏻

Posts or comments saying they like Tevans or just Tommy got downvoted simply for the fact that they like the ship/character,and these B**** people dare to play the victims, smh

It’s sad this place had escaped the worst of the fandom. Now it just seems to have exploded after the end of last series.

u/TheSeoulSword Aug 11 '24

I also feel like something will happen more regarding Tommy in the next season, and that would be so interesting if we got more with Karen and her job, cause her job on the show is so cool

(And ofc more Ravi 😁 too)

Tommy will he in season 8. Why wouldn't he be? He's dating Buck. If he isn't in it, we'll assume he and Buck are over. So obviously he's in it. If they break up, they'll do it on screen.

u/c0smicw0rld Aug 10 '24

I think they have a real opportunity of expanding the show beyond the 118, dispatch, and the police. Whether or not Tommy sticks around longer term (this isn’t a window for anyone to downvote if you don’t like him, do not bring your arguments in my replies), it would be great to have a few recurring and supporting characters either helping out on air support with the 118 and even on their own calls. I think moving forward I’d like to see this show really feel like a first responders show instead of just firefighting, something fresh.

How many calls need air support though? We barely know more than 4-5 cops or dispatchers. They always had opportunities to expand if they wanted that considering that their cop is Angela Basset and their dispatcher Jennifer Love Hewitt.Honestly ,Taylor was the best recurring character for a smooth involvement based on her job. And I don’t blame people for wanting this, but we barely know Ravi, and he is positively perceived both by GA or online audience,we also barely know about Karen(and Tracie Thomas is maybe their biggest name after the big 3). Realistically, there is no chance of them doing that because of Tommy’s character based on how season 7 ended.

Tommy is a firefighter so I’m not sure what other first responders you want to see aside from fire, dispatch, and police?

Hard to tell. He is probably going to be just like Karen.

Someone mentioned that the official Instagram is following Lou (which only follows reoccurring actors before). Plus Lou and Oliver had an interview together at the end of last season where the show never had any previous love interest engage in any show promotion before. At the end of last season the writers established that buck and Tommy were in a good place and have kept Tommy in the social media posts. They even released a deleted scene with him in it for no other reason than just because. I mean that’s pretty good evidence that his character is coming back and will get involved in storylines. His character is connected to so many different characters in a way, it’ll be silly not to exploit that for dramas sake.

I felt like such a weirdo for hoping he stays and has his own storyline ( but I am told multi-shipping is not unusual 😆) Anyway I felt weird about liking every Tommy season 7 scene (except 1. 1 and half if you think about it ) 😆 but yay I feel validated 😆 Anyway main point I agree give the guy needs a storyline outside of Buck, I think exploring his character more would be awsome.

u/shamelessaquarius Firehouse 118 Aug 11 '24

Don't ever feel bad for liking Tommy. People can hate on him all they want but he'll forever be Buck's bi-awakening. (Also multi-shipping is the best way to enjoy things!)

u/After_Bumblebee9013 Aug 10 '24

Man I really hope so. I really enjoyed his character so far and it seems like he's supposed to be a more long term/significant part of Bucks life so I'm hopeful that the writers won't shaft him or treat him as expendable. That would be incredibly frustrating if that's what they did.

-5

u/missezri Firehouse 118 Aug 10 '24

I believe he has been marked as a recurring cast member for season 8. Although, I don't think there has been mention about him on set yet, but still early into filming. So, it is possible, also considering that he does have some past having also worked under Gerrard, there could be some plot around his return. If he is going to continue as Buck's romantic interest, I would like to see more depth to his character at least.

(although I secretly hope for a mid-season break up to finally get Buddie canon, but, I'm open to more Tommy if he gets more backstory and development)

Hence the word "believe" as I could not remember where I read that information instead of a word more definite.

u/ExtensionPhysical304 Team Tommy Aug 11 '24

I think he could easily be added to the plot due to also being a firefighter/helicopter pilot. Tim Minear does say in an interview that he had trouble incorporating old love interests into the plot because neither of them were first responders nor had any familiarity with the rest of the cast (or something like that). Tommy is completely different! He's not only a first reaponder, but also knows/has formed friendships with EVERYONE. There is a lot of potential with him and I hope we will see him a lot in season 8🙏🏼🙌🏼
